England vs India (fourth test) The Oval

Both Buttler and Bairstow have now had enough opportunities to prove they’re good enough in red ball cricket and they aren’t. I’m not buying that 30 is the going rate for a keeper batsman. They’re both batsmen who keep, not vice versa.

Sad thing is they’re probably still in our current 7 best.

(Absolute superstars in the shorter format mind)
I think that’s the point there in the best 7 batsman in the country therefore should play.

Whether they good enough for international cricket is kind of a side issue if the other options worse

I think in an ideal world the best 7 batsmen in the country on current form should play. Form and confidence play a big part in batting, However as the ECB have decreed that no first class cricket should be played in the summer months, it impossible to asses top county players, and its also not possible to return a struggling test player back to his county to rediscover his touch.

Not saying anything as I have an agenda :(
I was for giving Buttler a go and have defended his selection. I don’t think he had been a success or an abject failure and there’s only lack of credible options which would keep him in. I’m ambivalent really but think we should take a fdifferent direction with Bairstow at 7 keeping wicket. Even then I’m not arguing that with any passion or certainty

Once again I’ll say I’m happy with either at 7. But neither as a specialist bat

True I think the problem is trying to find 5 batsmen that we can realistically call specialist.
Oh indeed.

Given where either bat, it’s actually just one spot - number 6 (with Root and Stokes at 4 and 5). We need a number 6, and my argument is that that’s not Buttler or Bairstow. I hope it’s Pope, his first class record suggests it could be. Could it be Livingstone or Clark? Maybe.

the issues 1-3 are completely separate discussions.
