England v Ireland, One Off Test

Very good is pushing it a bit for me but as I said he's improved over the years. One of my main issues with him is that when he's bad, he's absolutely horrific and I think he's poor with both bat and ball under pressure. He could well be on a permanent decline now given that he's 32, hasn't scored a test century for 3 years and was shocking during the World Cup. The Aussies seem to have his number and I think he needs to be taken out of the firing line at least in the short-term.
I’ve just showed you his comparisons.

Was Vettori?

Listen, Ali has 177 test wickets and 5 test tons. He’s a very good all rounder

I wouldn’t play him in the Ashes as it is mind

Vettori is someone I'd class as very good, short of being truly excellent but a very fine bowler. We have to remember that Vettori will have played double the tests of Ali and Panesar and therefore performed at a consistent level for many years. I'd be willing to change my opinion if Ali was to spend the next couple of years with a similar record, but I can't see it and as mentioned I think he's usually poor under pressure, stats don't tell a story as to when people have performed when it matters which is something I don't think Ali does.

85 all out against Ireland has to be the most ignominious batting performance in recent English history, which is some achievement.

For everything wonderful he has done with our ODI team, Trev can't bugger off to Hyderabad quickly enough as far as this test team and the Ashes are concerned.

I think Ali is the best Test spinner I can remember - apart from Swann who was excellent. So I cannot criticise him on skill/talent/application etc. I can criticise him on form and I can accept that he's not justifying selection at the moment. But he's has been excellent especially considering his batting was also excellent and very effective coming in at 8 as he often did.
