Burns and Pope are worth sticking with for now IMO. Sibley, Crawley, Hameed and Lawrence are simply not good enough and will get eaten alive in Australia. Any batting line-up you suggest looks shit but I'd probably go something like: Burns, Bairstow, Stokes, Root, Malan, Pope, Buttler...

Bringing Eoin Morgan in to captain for a couple of years may have also been an option but that boat has sailed now.

Morgan would be a horrendous test captain

Buttler isn’t the issue but he was an Ed Smith selection it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he eventually gets dropped.

Was also brought in as someone to counter-attack but I don’t really see it. The 1st innings he had a great chance to make a decent contribution and failed

Based on what? He's transformed the One Day team, the best captain we've ever had in that format. I know Test cricket is a different beast but IMO his leadership skills and cricketing brain is better than Root's and could have been transferred to Test cricket. As I say though, that ship has sailed so it won't happen anyway.

Root has been dealt a bad hand in many ways but his captaincy leaves a lot to be desired IMO.

It's clearly not just the players you have though is it (although that obviously plays a big part). Otherwise they'd just pick the captain out of a hat before each Test.

Root is a much better batsman but Morgan has far more about him as a captain, as evidenced by the way he transformed our One Day team with proper leadership and captaincy.

He amazingly seems to be in the side just to see the new ball off, irrespective of runs which personally I find crazy.

ive got to be honest with you, saying Morgan could have been red ball captain his perhaps the maddest thing I’ve read on the cricket forum

I know what you mean there

in his defence he was unbelievable last summer, people forget that, one of our best ever chases in test cricket and he played proper

but you do think have a swing, he’s as talented as anyone

btw we would have won this test with Ben stokes

that shouldn’t really be forgotten in slll of this

he was a huge huge miss today

he’d have bowled all morning and batted all afternoon

We could really do with Stokes being available like he’s a massive miss.

On Buttler he has all the talent in the world, he could easily be our De Kock or Pant but for whatever reason it hasn’t quite worked out. He was excellent last summer I agree. Perhaps they could clarify his role, wouldn’t mind them just telling him to go out and tee off

We got to bowl in the best conditions and bat in the best conditions not sure the decision after winning the toss was the wrong one
