Echo Watch

The club has proven up to now it’s on the top of the game with player buys and sales, the latter none of us having a clue about until at best 24 hours before
Given how we took the eyes out of the buying clubs re Jobe, Clarke and Stewart I have no doubt if we get shot of eg Sadiki, Roefs, Brobbey, we will not be short changed

News happens all kinds of ways, just not at the Echo.

Don’t think so, Sarbo lad. Reading back it looks like a professional display against mostly limited opposition. Early Carabao Cup stuff.

putting your words in italics doesnt detract from the fact you have had a regi blinker of epic proportions here denise pal

If you run a sports (or news/entertainment) site and post..."Well folks, nothing happening today on the football transfer front." your expiry date can be measured in minutes.

Our eyeballs are the currency. Not surprising that those trying to mine them will post the most outlandish rumour.

This is not going to change. It will only increase until we believe absolutely nothing - some bad actors on a national basis have that in mind. Russian hackers don't neccessarily want you to believe what they publish, but are fine with making you disbelieve everything you read. Easier to do and just as effective.

Gone are the days when we had genuine exclusives on the back page courtesy of Argus (Billy Butterfield) Most of us oldies will remember him - the club were shit scared of him iirc
Where did you get that from? The club were never scared of him. He was a gentleman and not a bad journalist. He lived just round the corner to Roker Park. He travelled to away games on the team coach along with Len Hetherington (another gent). I admit he was Alan Brown's mouthpiece at times. There were other journalists who were put up with. I remember one who was on the phone during the match and he missed a goal because he was listening to a horse race where he had money on - professional or what! I remember Bob Cass being banned from the Press Box under Alan Brown. Bob Stokoe re-instated him saying everyone starts with a clean sheet. In the Cup run we had national journalists covering us. Some of them were arrogant and thought themselves above everyone. Brian Glanville always thought he should have been England manager.

Haha @ ‘regi blinker’.

Not sure how though. People disagreeing with me is good because maybe they might give me food for thought.

Fair point, well made. But then I still think it’s fair to call it out. Like I said earlier, once journalism relies on anti-journalism to exist it’s self-defeating.

It’s like the police breaking into people’s houses and robbing people to fund more coppers on the beat.
“The Sunderland Echo… because it’s at least the second time you’ve heard it.”

News just in!

‘Sunderland and Everton locked in £20m transfer battle for Leicester City winger with 16 goal contributions’

- Or, The Echo reports that Football Insider is reporting that Alan Nixon is reporting that Fatawu’s price tag is about £20m. Oddly there’s no evidence of any actual interest from either club.

I know marra, and in the grand scheme of things there’s worse going on in the world, so it only bothers me up to a point (enough to start a thread about it haha)

I do though think it’s wrong to be hoodwinking fellow supporters - especially older ones who aren’t necessarily internet-savvy - all to make a dishonest buck.
Relaying news from other sources that older supporters may have a problem accessing, or even knowing about (because they aren't internet savvy,) could be considered more of a service and less of a deceit imo.

Billy certainly was a gent - I was at the Echo at the same time and can distinctly remember the club were always preferring to work with him than against - you have to bear in mind that in those days the Echo held a circulation nearing 80k and because of that had a hell of a lot of power as to what it could print - especially on the back page

Strange thread.

Phil Smith from the Echo is one of the few journalists I place any store in whatsoever when it comes to SAFC.

Compare that to the ‘reejun’ client journalists who are largely Saudi fluffers when all is considered, basically enemies of SAFC, the city & Wearside in general.

Don’t have social media.

Nothing wrong with the pair of them. Their content away from the echo is very good.

As the OP doesn't have social media, he's basing everything on what he sees in the echo.

So What? Copleys a lads fan like us, jumps onto other Journos stories but shares his own thoughts - He works the echo not a national so wont have many contacts out of the Sunderland bubble..Have a watch of his podcasts he does with a few just talking football - what a sad thread to post
100% agree with this. Singling out a young journo on a forum for likes.....

But I’m talking about the Echo, man! When I’m talking about something I tend to base it on the thing I’m talking about.

Love Phil Smith; Jason Jones is another one who, if you judge him on the output, is a hack, shill, low-level huckster … take your pick
Sorry like but you're clearly an absolute C. Just young lads trying to make their way in an industry they have a passion for, not their fault they need to drive clicks.

For Likes? I have no social media, and I don’t base my views on being liked. Evidently!

Honest people can disagree about the degree to which individuals are complicit in the system - I have obviously given my view of this. I could just criticise the Echo as an organisation but then we’re talking about two writers here (excluding Smith), so it’s obvious anyway.

People on here single out players and our manager every week if we don’t win, even though we can all see that they’re grafting their nuts off for 90mins and it’s a zero sum game (excluding draws); yet when I speak about people who clearly are earning a lazy and dishonest living then it’s outrageous.

Not their fault they’re doing the opposite of what they trained for. Maybe don’t do it?

I agree that this would also be considered bad journalism and would be ethically worse than clickbait. But if we complain about journalistic standards there, why not here?

This is probably the best rebuttal I’ve had so far and I have some sympathy with it, although the intention on the part of the organisation and the writer in re-reporting stories is absolutely not to help older supporters. If it is, why try and con those same older people through the clickbait?

If they are doing a service in re-reporting internet slop then it’s an unintentional byproduct of a less noble motive.
Local lad, becomes a journalist, writes about the team he supports, and has written some good stuff, gets pelters.
Some people, man.
Brilliant.
Snidey clickbait man - you and yr mate have a word with yourselves
What mate? One thing I won’t tolerate is being accused of having a mate.

Really? When you said this?

"Love Phil Smith; Jason Jones is another one who, if you judge him on the output, is a hack, shill, low-level huckster … take your pick."

I don't have a problem with the content from Smith, Copley or Jones
All appear to be genuine fans, I listen to some of the podcast & you tube stuff, I wouldn't subscribe to the echo because the website is crap,
