I find this very odd so soon
I suspect it’s down to the number of injuries. They were getting players signed up to play 2nd team games as a matter of urgency prior to the season starting.
The 2nd team world is very different now from a few years ago. Counties had large squads of contracted players and young players rarely got games.
Durham released Sol Bell and regularly asked him back to fill a batting place in our 2nds.
Whitfield could use these games as the old "shop window", to show how good he is. Each game he plays is an opportunity to impress coaches from the opposition.
The MCC Young cricketers fulfilled a similar role for "released" cricketers, but are no longer there.
Good luck to the lad if he wants to make a career out of cricket. There are another 17 professional clubs out there, it is not always about Durham.
