Durham season preview on Cricinfo

Can't disagree with anything in that article except for the inclusion of Smith in the starting line up. Didn't Jennings open with Stoneman towards the end of last season with Richardson at number 3? I would like to see them persevere with him rather than give Smith or Muchall another chance.

Just checked and the county championship kicks off a fortnight tomorrow (weather permitting). Hope to get to a few games this season and think we'll do ok.

I got the impression that Jennings and Richardson where going to get first crack in the batting line up at the start of this season ahead of Smith and Muchall. Iam not sure but i thought i read something at the end of last season that is why Richardson had decided to sign a new contract and not move on. I think Smith and Muchall would have been released at the end of last season if they had have been out of contract.
If all the players are fit and available i reckon the starting line up for the Somerset match could be
Stoneman
Jennings
Richardson
Stokes
Benkenstein
Collingwood
Mustard
Borthwick
Thorp
Onions
Rushworth

That would be my choice too. However, if there's nothing in the pitch early season for Borthwick I wouldn't be against bringing in Harmison for a couple of games. Make the bugger work for his money.

Wayne's team would be my team too.

Good article that, one that's given me some hope for the season. I don't see us winning the league but I think we should be up there!

Just hope we can manage to bring in Rudolph!

Benks, Colly and the quicks are bound to suffer injuries over the season and miss games, we'll struggle badly when this happens. Staying up is the only aim.

Looks like Rudolph was just speculation

With those 3 gone and only Jennings in we will have space within the cap...if the cash is there of course

I get the feeling there is going to be a lot more reducing of the wage bill over the next 12 to 24 months. Don't think they will be going anywhere near the maximum salary cap for a few years. Any senior players who are out of contract at the end of a season and not performing in the first team will be out.
Looks like the squad could resemble the way it was 10 years ago with a squad made up of lots local youngsters with a few senior pros.

The cap should really be measured over say a 3 year period, else these contract log jam situations are going to occur....

most of the expensive contracts would have been signed before the cap too I'd assume?

I think there was a bit of flexibility allowed at first but the crack was we were way over the top and had been warned more than once about it.

Thing is, if Notts and Warks can have the teams they have and operate within the cap then we should be able to too. Issue obviously is people like Harmison on mega bucks for playing second team cricket. Plunkett last season too, but of course that should've eased this year.

Looking forward to the young lads getting a good crack of the whip though.

What do you know about the youngsters?
