Durham Pre Season

Not long now, as mentioned elsewhere - a quite extensive pre season schedule this year, which is very pleasing and which should have us ready for proper action come April 20.

Sunday/Monday 25/26 March
Cambridge University @ Fenners
2 day match

Tuesday/Wednesday 27/28 March
Middlesex @ Merchant Taylor's
2 day match

Tuesday/Wednesday 3/4 April
Yorkshire @ Riverside
2 day match

Friday/Saturday/Sunday 13/14/15 April
Durham University @ Riverside
3 day match

Still puts us at a disadvantage IMO that our league opener against Kent will be their second game, but hopefully these friendlies will have us hitting the ground running.

God I couldn’t think of anything worse than having to play in this weather at minute. Hope it’s pulled itself together for mid April!

I'm in between contracts ATM and that means I'll almost certainly be at the Yorkshire game. I've said before but the bairn played at Merchant Taylor's school last year for the DCB U15s and they played on the square where Middlesex play when they are there. The pavilion is absolutely picture postcard material. Its a quirky place to get to mind.

Been out this morning it feels months way from the cricket season, freezing. Not sure what state the playing surface will be in for the Yorkshire match, could do more harm than good.

Money talks and so does ambition unfortunately and with Durham being in Division 2 this was always liable to happen. Borthwick was ripe to leave Durham for 2 or 3 years. One of the problems as well is that the youngsters no longer have the likes of Di Venuto and Benkenstein to look up to and learn from and when the former went to Surrey he was always going to come hunting for Rocky. He always rated him and would never hear a bad word spoken about him.

It does of course put more pressure on John Windows at the Academy which inevitably means that lads who perhaps shouldnt get a game will do, or certainly quicker than they otherwise would have.

As an aside but on the Academy theme do we know who the youngest player ever is to play for Durham? I only ask this because there are some 16/17 year old prospects who, you never know, we may see soon. Keep tabs on the following surnames: Bell, Bushnell, Oswell and Doneathy. Another name to throw into the hat is Ross Greenwell.

I think it is still Gary "gazza" Scott.

I agree with Colly

Coughlin has not remotely benefited his career by leaving, nor have many others who were offered the same money here

No loyalty, good to see Colly call it out

Money talks, you're right about that. But in terms of someone to look up to, if you can't gain all the insipration you'll ever need from Paul Collingwood then you're in the wrong game.

Lad from Shotley Bridge, went to a state school, was given no privileges whatsoever but drove himself on talent and hard work to become England captain. Not only that, the only Englishman to have led his side to World Cup glory. That's before you look at what he's won and done domestically.

They are not going to stay out of loyalty especially when you are 25. Durham in the second division, not paying the wages and you get an offer that increases your pay by 50% or doubles?

Maybe Durham CCC needs to ask the question of why they are leaving and do something about it rather than pulling on the heart strings.

If Harker hadnt got us into this financial mess in the first place then perhaps we wouldnt be where we are now.
