Bit underwhelming after the Philander thread, who the hell is John Hastings???

Underwhelming was the exact word I was going to use before seeing your post.

Glad it's for the whole season but in honesty I'd rather see a top order batsman..... Hope he turns out to be f***ing brilliant.

Don't disagree with any of that. I'm not adverse to his signing, just think there were other areas of the team (top order) that should have been a priority but I guess the bowling side's short of experience apart from Onions, even Rushworth hasn't been a regular for that long. Also depends on who's available, especially for most of the season as Durham seem to have targeted.

Anyway, good luck to him.

28 years old and only 38 career first class matches.

Is this a wind up?

38 First Class games is pretty substantial for Australia. Remember they only have about 6 teams.

I have seen him play a bit and albeit mainly in the shorter form, I think he will do a good job at Durham. He reminds me a bit of Rushworth in how he bowls and can give it a whack in the middle order. Guessing he is pretty cost effective too so lets not write him off just yet.

What annoys me is this 'big bitter' thing. The club are clearly still f***ing about trying to sign players with an eye on T20, despite our recent success elsewhere. For me, the Champonship should ALWAYS be the priority.

Always will be to fans, sadly t20 brings in the money so all clubs will focus on that.

Just the way it goes now sadly mate

Would much rather have a player like Hastings all season than a superstar like Gayle flying in for 5 or 6 t20 games.

Looking at the dates for the IPL it finishes on the 1st June. Hastings plays for Chenai one of the better sides and if they make the latter stages of the competition he will miss the first 7 championship matches plus a few one day matches.
Personally pleased Durham have not signed Philander he tossed it of at Somerset during his short stay there and the South African cricket board where picking and choosing when he could play and would not have come cheap.
Don't know much about this fella but it is very rare for an established Australian state cricketer not to make an impression when they play county cricket, just a pity he will miss half the county championship season. Agree with Brandon it does feel a bit like a T20 signing because of that.

I'm going to buck a trend here and say that its an interesting signing. Its the type of signing that Durham have pulled off before - a player who has been on the fringes of international cricket, falls out of favour and Durham spot him. Benkenstein remember was playing club cricket in Cumbria when Cook spotted him and Di Venuto was similar to Benks in that he had flirted around the fringes of the international circuit without making a huge impression.

Di Venuto had a more than decent record at Derbyshire in fairness. I didn't know that about Benks, just assumed he was on the fringes of the SA side because of a good record over the and we signed him on the back of that.

I'm not going to right this lad off, I hope he's going to be a good signing. I just think people's expectations were raised by that Philander story and people assumed we'd be going after a top order batsman because that's where we seem to be lacking most.

Expectations were raised because durham tweeted a big signing about to be revealed.

Hastings is a good player but not a big name. Not yet anyway. The club have taken dog's abuse for their tweet. They should think before they tweet. If they'd just said they've signed an overseas player it wouldn't have been so bad.
