He was always a handy addition to your squad in the early editions of Championship Manager I recall, especially as he could play anywhere across the defence & midfield to a really high consistent standard.

Years back, I spent a few summers working in Ibiza (music stuff) and I bumped into him one day on the beach and got talking with him and his mates. One of them ran a well-known record shop in Southport. All good lads. They were all enjoying themselves, although Matteo not quite as much as the others (he stuck to beers).

Ended up in the same club as him on several occasions and without fail, he’d come over with an armful of beers for me and my colleagues and have a natter.

Really lovely fella. No airs or graces. Wishing him all the best.
