Domestic Structure Hampers Test Side

The thing that does concern me is the batting.

We're never -or incredibly rarely, at any rate - going to produce genuine quicks or spinners because as you say, medium Pacers who can move the ball take batches of wickets in county cricket, hence why we've always got an exorbitant number of 80-85mph seamers to choose from.

But given those conditions, and it's what English batsmen are used to facing, you'd think that they'd be able to do with a moving ball on a slightly green top, yet time and time again, our batters just collapse like a house of cards the moment there's any amount of deviation.

Good post. I think the difference at international cricket is when you are facing 80-85mph bowlers they just give nowt away. When Jennings was playing against SA the likes of Philander was just hitting 4th stump every single ball over after over without a release ball and you just knew he would nick off to one of them. For Stoneman there will always be enough balls to cut or drive in county cricket but at the higher level you just done get them anywhere near to the same extent. Also the support bowlers are considerably weaker so if you do survive 12 over or so the hard work is done. Its a tough school international cricket and county cricket is a poor breeding ground.
