While at Chelsea DiMatteo played at 4231, which means the wide midfielders have more defensive responsibilities than in DiCanio's 424. Personally, I think Fletcher, Altidore, and Giaccherini are our three best attacking players. However, I do not think Giaccherini offers enough defensively to play wide in this formation and should be behind the central striker. I was curious if Fletcher (when healthy) could play wide left in that formation. I think he could be a tough cover running late into the box with Johnson crossing in from the right and could still get 8-10 goals as a midfielder. This would look something like this:
--------------Altidore--------------
--Fletcher-Giaccherini-Johnson--
----------Ki----Cattermole--------
Colback-Diakite-O'Shea-Celutska
I might be crazy and I know he hasn't been hired yet, but I think this formation could work. Thoughts?
