While at Chelsea DiMatteo played at 4231, which means the wide midfielders have more defensive responsibilities than in DiCanio's 424. Personally, I think Fletcher, Altidore, and Giaccherini are our three best attacking players. However, I do not think Giaccherini offers enough defensively to play wide in this formation and should be behind the central striker. I was curious if Fletcher (when healthy) could play wide left in that formation. I think he could be a tough cover running late into the box with Johnson crossing in from the right and could still get 8-10 goals as a midfielder. This would look something like this:

--------------Altidore--------------

--Fletcher-Giaccherini-Johnson--

----------Ki----Cattermole--------

Colback-Diakite-O'Shea-Celutska

I might be crazy and I know he hasn't been hired yet, but I think this formation could work. Thoughts?

Cattermole....?
We'd be going way backwards, surely?

Thanks. I figured as much. Fletcher's game just reminds me an awful lot of Clint Dempsey's game, and he used to bang 10 goals a season for Fulham playing LM by mostly getting into the box and heading in crosses.

This is Sunderland. we don't do footballers!

Ya, definitely don't know about holding midfielders. They all look either feast or famine. Part of me was thinking Cabral because Im not a huge fan of Vaughn/Gardner/Larsson.

Your crazy. We at least need a recognised goalkeeper in there. Or is it running keeper

If we go 4231 then this is what I'd expect RDM to go with (at least until Fletch is fit.)

-----------------Westwood-----------------
Celustka-----Diakite/Rob----O'Shea-----Colback
---------Catts-------------Cabral-------
AJ/Mavrias---------KSY---------Giach/Mavrias
--------------------Altidore-----------------

No no no no no

Fletcher up front. He is the only way we will score goals.

we could have Ferguson and Mourihno in charge and play 10-10-10 but if players can't be arsed to do the basics such as tracking a player then it won't be long before fans will be calling for their heads!

The latest example being that all 3 goals conceded to WBA could have been far bettered defended. BBC iPlayer doesn't have MOTD on yet but try watching the WBA highlights again

conceding the goals had fuck all to do with tactics, it was due to lazy incompetence that we conceded them so easily. This makes the job harder if you let goals in and it's just a shame that Johnson, Altidore and Fletcher had some good chances but 2 got deflected wide and 1 flew over the bar and ended up with Fletcher injured!

if Di Canio had to treat the players as school kids and explain the footballing basics to them then no wonder they didn't like it. PDC's tactics had fuck all to do with the 3 goals we conceded to WBA as they were due to a piss poor attitude in my opinion. Some on here want to blame Westwood/Colback for all 3 but there's a bit more to it if you watch the goals again and the various angle replays

SAFC players ball watching are to blame for WBA's 1st goal as Sess runs into the box obviously wanting the ball more runs between 2 SAFC players and nobody tracks him. Also look at Johnson's defensive contribution to WBA 2nd goal as he completely ignored Ridgewell running into the box unmarked yet Johnson was ahead of him to begin with. Finally Colback's feeble effort at a block (half heartedly sticking out a leg and then turning away) for the 3rd after being out of position due to being drawn towards the ball making space for the WBA player

I posted a review of the goals and got no replies but it would be a thick blinkered fucker to argue against what I've said. Aye it may not be 100% correct but f***ing hell, if Sess/Ridgewell are allowed to run free into the box and Colback doesn't want to commit to a block then what chance did PDC have winning the game?

the players should hang their heads in shame if they need a manager to motivate them to do footballing basics rather than concentrate on improving tactics etc. It's a bit shit because it is basic stuff they were lacking yesterday (and noticeable in prior games) and it cost us big time. All 3 goal attempts should have been made harder for WBA without any managers input and could have possibly been blocked

Di Canio shouldn't even have to address crap like this but he did pick up on Sess being allowed to get into the box unmarked in his MOTD interview. So no doubt he will also have seen what I've just pointed out above so it's not as if he won't be telling them week in week out what to do but f***ing hell, they are so called professionals yet he's got to tell them not to ball watch and track someone who's running into the box?

This half hearted approach has been apparent in Bruce's reign and MO'N and it seems as if the players put in the effort when they feel like it rather than every single second of the match!. The players concerned need to take a close look at themselves as I'm f***ing sure I'd be tracking players if I was getting paid £40,000 a week and wouldn't just ball watch or take a chance it will be alright if I didn't bother picking up a man.

bearing in mind, Johnson's shot deflected just wide in the 1st half and in the 2nd half Altidore's shot possibly was going in til it deflected of Olsson and Fletcher's shot again could have went in. So with a little bit more effort on the defensive attitude then it could have been a different result

shame really and for 'The Lads' it's back to feet up and playing the XBOX 360 then out on the lash later for them now I suppose

Agree , the video of gardners half hearted attempt to run after sess , then stoppping cos he knew he had blown it is criminal , then he turns his back and shrugs his shoulders when the ball is in the net ?

aye, unfortunately it's common practice if you look at how goals are scored and the opportunities to stop them aren't acted upon. Even the top teams are guilty of this attitude, for example watch the Man City/Utd highlights

the 1st goal has Kolorov coming outside Nasri to put the cross in. Valencia who had yards on him to begin with just ignores Kolorov running past looking for the ball! If Valencia tracks him then who knows if he'd got the cross over for Aguero or even got the pass in the 1st place.

also the 3rd goal, (the best one of all and even worse than Sess waltzing into the box) watch Fellaini as Aguero is right beside him initially when the ball is played into Negredo. Aguero runs around Fellaini into the box and Fellaini does fuck all and when Aguero scores, Fellaini has the f***ing cheek to throws his arms up into the air!!!!

Chris Smalling also does the 'arms out in disgust' for the 4th, yet surely he should be aware that Nasri is behind him in yards of space just in case the ball does come long over his head?

some fans only see the result but simple things like this are sometimes the difference between success and failure!

It's not always noticeable as many of these lazy moments don't result in goals but they are certainly there and the more players piss about rather than picking up/tracking back etc then the more chance they will have of conceding
