Diarra out till December

Give owa. We knew the drill when we signed him and the other lads, turning AFCON into SAFCON.
But similarly, they must realise that having a competition in the middle of European seasons would mean less preparation time? We’ll probably just hoy them in private jets straight after the game or next day.
I’m talking about the other lads.

If any player gets called up to play for their Country and they decided not to go, for whatever reason, injured or whatever.
They wouldn't be able to play any Club games while the tournament is on.

It's all about the call up.
Eh, if he got called up and refused, he could 100% play club games. There isn’t a rule that would state otherwise.

When he gets the call he will go. He won’t stay then miraculously play for us because a genuine injury is the only thing that would stop him. His national federation is entitled to assess him. We need to have the experts aligned, medical, legal, and insurers. We wouldn’t play him if not fit, although his country would try to, and we wouldn’t try to con him out’ve playing for his country in an important competition. If we did we’d be morons and he would deservedly want to leave.

I'm not sure about that (now) but I can say for sure, that years ago that was a rule. The whole Club or Country debate?
One to research but if he chooses to not play, for whatever reason but it fit, I’m sure he’d be able to play. If you’re available, you’re not sanctioned because you refused to go.

Spot on ....he'll be Proud to represent his Country in a major Tournament, if it happens best of Luck to the lad & its always a case of what will be, will be.

You're both kind of right and kind of wrong.

There is a Fifa rule that prevents players from being selected for their clubs for the duration of the time they'd have been away and for 5 days afterwards. It's up to the nation to decide whether to enforce that though. We got done by it about 20 years ago - George McCartney pulled out of the Northern Ireland squad with a minor injury, they chose to enforce the rule and he was unavailable for our following game (they played midweek therefore couldn't play for us at the weekend).

In reality, players pull out of international squads all the time and it's rarely enforced as you'd just piss the player off. McCartney made himself unavailable for NI for years after that until they changed managers and cited run ins with Lawrie Sanchez as the reason.

Ah ha.... Now that you mention it, I remember the McCartney saga 😃

I knew there was something about not playing if selected 😱

Some of the YT gimps are talking like our whole squad will piss off to AFCON and we will plummet to the bottom of the league.
Only two countries can make the final for a start. It’ll be over and they will be back before we know it 💪

There you go, learn something new everyday. I’d imagine if he was to refuse if would be for a genuine reason. If he’s injured, I’d doubt they’d call him up in the first place.

We're missing two guaranteed starters (Reinildo and Sadiki).

Our depth will be hit hard for sure, but this "Sunderland are missing SEVEN players OMG" stuff lacks any context.

Can't really agree with this.

All of those 7 have contributed significantly this season, even Masuaku who has done so the least started in the win at Forest.

It's wishful thinking to suppose that we can lose 7 players from the first team squad and that results won't suffer. They are all new signings after all - if we won't miss them then why sign them?!

Even if it was only Sadiki it would be a huge blow given we don't really have a replacement for him. And it's him and 6 others on top.

There's nothing we can do about it (though signing Guendouzi on 1st January would definitely help 😂), and we knew it was going to happen, but it doesn't change the fact it's going to be an absolutely massive challenge.

That’s not quite accurate. Any team that makes the semi finals (4) is there until the very end, or at least 24 hours before the end to take part in either the final or the 3rd 4th place play off.

There's also the context of the World Cup here. No one will be wanting to give up their place - I would think this is bigger than a regular AFCON for the players.

When Diarra said he aims to play against the Mags, I hear that he wants to prove himself fit for AFCON as well.

Just amazing that we actually have players who are internationals man

Only a few year ago we had nee body good enough for league 1

Whatever will be will be trust in RLB he will have a plan

Ofc you’re right and I forgot About that bit, still we don’t be missing half a team like some of them fuckers on yt say we will…

I think we will cope anyway.

Cheers 👍
I think we’ll cope but I think that likelihood is that we’ll lose 3-4 for the entire tournament.

But the pressure is off and the lads waiting in the wings absolutely deserve their chance to play. Bring it on.
