This. Cirkin is furthest ahead due to our attack breaking down. Ball gets played back to their keeper and the trigger for the press is there - he rightly goes.

Brobbey closes really well, Rigg not as well and Leeds get round them. Geertruida loses his man ball watching. Between Xhaka, Alderete, and Mukiele they don’t deal with the spare man on the left. Alderete and Mukiele are two yards apart as they run back and I wonder if Alderete could have moved over earlier rather than Xhaka be the one to go. When Xhaka does go, he makes up the ground well but doesn’t do enough to stop the cross. Mukiele gets caught by DCL’s run and could do better.

Loads of things we could do better for the goal, Cirkin being up there wasn’t the problem.
A left back can't be closing the keeper down. He got carry away fair enough but as soon as Leeds get possession and he has no chance of winning it back he should be sprinting back into his defensive position.

Defending is his primary role. He got it wrong and it cost us. Generally I thought he did very well especially given his lack of game time.

Alderete saw that Stach was left alone by Geertruida and he leaves his position from near post to mark him. He was in a perfect position to stop DCL before that. Can't blame only one player for that succession of errors.

Respectfully disagree. When a trigger for a press is there, you press as a team and whoever is closest goes and goes with intent.

Seen it loads this season and it’s clearly something that’s been coached into the team. We’ve had loads of praise for the way we press this season. As a team, we just didn’t quite get it right yesterday and - to be fair to Leeds - they moved the ball very well to get around us.

It’s clear it’s coached, and as such if there is a turnover, there will be an understanding of who covers who. It’s happened a lot this season, but as we’ve conceded from it, the blame is shifted onto Cirkin. Plenty times Sadiki has had to fill in at left back. I wonder why?

Football has moved on from the days where the fullbacks didn’t cross the halfway line.
Im fairly sure he will have been coached to do this and when he does another player will have been coached to cover his position. Maybe they don’t do it right , maybe Leeds just scored a bloody good goal but what I am certain about is that players under Le Bris are not just doing their own thing and ignoring instructions.

First game in months against an in form side, playing in a team with half a dozen absences. I came away thinking he'd done absolutely fine given the circumstances. Very surprised (although not sure why) to see so many wanting to pile on him
He did ok for Denis , did his absolute best and given his recent history thats a major plus for him . He didnt get shown up on PL debut .
Having said that his deficiencies as a reliable first pick remain . He doesnt clear the box with headers , can get skinned against top class wingers and concentration goes a bit under fatigue.
Maybe as he matures we can coach that right .
I'm less concerned about his potential than i was , he's back in the possible camp .

Reinaldo gets forward regularly and very well. How many times has he closed the keeper down this season? I don't recall a single occasion.

Reminded me a bit of PVA at times, he was constantly in the opposition box despite playing LB, he was fine going forward whilst being defensively a bit suspect, I think defensively we were all over the place in general for various reasons. He did ok.
I think him and Renildo are the reason we mainly go down the left in attack. Two very attack minded full backs with attack minded wingers in front of them.

The rest of the team kind of tuck in to allow the midfield to help out on that side. Means whoever is playing right back needs to be shit hot though, as they're usually the one left isolated. Luckily for us Mukiele has been there and been having some storming games.

His 1st experience as a player in the top flight after recovering from injury and thrown in at the deep end he actually performed better than expected...lapse for the build up to the goal aside he done OK. Not 100% fitness wise and mistakes get punished in this league he can only improve with games. 5 at the back v city may benefit his confidence if we can avoid a tanking. After watching forest nullify city id expect us to play a similar game and hopefully get something out of it points wise.

Think he just needs games. When was the last time he completed 90 minutes?

Thought Cirkin coped well. Yesterday's team was at least half a team away from our strongest 11 and at times looked like strangers on the pitch. They got the press wrong maybe because of that. As for Xhaka that is probably the hardest he has had to work this season. He was having to cover and fill gaps in all over the place. Happy enough with a point.

He was OK yesterday, of course he made mistakes but for me there's a few things a lot of people I spoke to last night seemed to forget.
  • He hasn't played a game of senior football in yonks. Yes he's got some U21 games under his belt, but the difference in pace and intensity between U21 and Premier League is so huge that it's almost a different sport.
  • He'd not yet played a proper match with most of his current teammates. It looked like there wasn't the same level of understanding that somebody like Reinildo has, and this led to a few times when he pressed when teammates weren't expecting him to, which left them not ready to cover behind him.
  • Undoubtedly there would have been nerves at play. At 23 he's still pretty young, and you'd expect him to be nervous making his Premier League debut.
  • I also think some of it was that he looked a bit too eager to please and trying a bit too hard. You could see at times he'd press the ball, force them to pass it back, and instead of dropping back into position now he'd achieved the goal of stopping Leeds progress, he continued to press the next player. Felt a bit like because he was trying to hard to make the most of the opportunity, he wasn't thinking clearly at times.
I'm confident that with more game time he will come good, I've always been a fan of his and if he can stay healthy he will make a proper contribution to this squad.

Do you think this was a rogue press by Cirkin or do you think this is an evolution of our playing style?

So many things looked wrong with our setup for their goal; partially because Leeds found a couple of great passes, but you look and feel like there was some disjointedness between players today.

Spot on, I don’t believe RLB has asked out keft back to close the keeper down, that’s someone else’s job.

Defensive shape will be higher up on his priorities.

Also thought he did well considering first prem game and hasn’t played for a long time.

Said it for a long time that he isn't quick enough at getting back into position unfortunately

He probably just got carried away in the heat of the moment, it happens. We had Brobbey, Le Fee and Rigg all starting the press. Cirkin has got to get back into position ASAP.
