Wing back formation?

Pants

JOS
Reveillere
New CB

Wing backs- PVA
Johnson (Bit dodgy I know he's not the best at defending, so mighnt work)

Cattermole#
Larsson
Rodwell

Fletcher/Wickham
Defoe

The obvious flaw is that Johnson is massively out of position and can't defend. He should be further forward.

Just a thought that we can have 2 up front and also 3 CM's

Just seen him in George's shop at the top of Thorney, buying his sister a bottle of cherry lambrini. Would of bought normal but he said she is classy

That team would be bullied out of pretty much every game. I think Defoe needs Wickham alongside him in a front three. I also think we could do with Rodwell in midfield.

as i said i would love to get rodwell into the midfield but he just hasn't earnt his spot. and larsson has. likewise wickham has not earnt his time on the pitch

I wouldn't be at all surprised if we play like this, not just because poyet is bullish about his system [bar that farcical 5-2-3 or whatever it was for two games]

Our best spell in the premiership since quillips was with darren bent on his own up top, who in all the same ways as defoe can't play on his own up top.

if we have giaccherini behind him playing through balls for defoe to run onto then we can play to his strengths whilst still having the numbers in midfield to keep possesion and press hard [with a bit of effort]

we even have options with the likes of reveillere, bricutt, rodwell, wickham, fletcher on the bench
Totally agree with you, but to be fair, the system that you have written there is basically the same thing as Poyet's current system, just with Seb dropping back.
Even though we say we have 2 CMs in Poyet's system, one is often naturally behind the other anyway, we don't quite play a 443, a 4141 or a 4231... It's kind of a mash between the 3.

I reckon Defoe would be fine on his own up front, but as you say, the key is the players behind him playing through balls. Currently, Gomez is the only person who has shown glimpses of this, even if he's been bad overall, which is why I think Gus keeps playing him

it is not a million miles apart aye, but the difference between having two dropping back i think would be massive, our centrehalfs currently hit it long so often as they don't have options, one man can be marked out of the game alot easier than two and with both catts and larsson dropping back it gives our defense more opportunity to play it out from the back, to players with decent range of passing anarl, plus the more solid defense allows johnson and giaccherini to get further up the pitch and not be recieving it in our own half...

That's what I mean though - the issue isn't 'who are the best 6 attacking players this season?' - it's 'what would make the best team?' Giaccherini playing off Defoe as a striker, with nobody other than Alvarez over 5'10, is way too lightweight.

we did at times but jones & bent never looked a very good partnership, both were much better on their own. same with gyan IMO and by the time welbeck came good bent had started to look shite anyhow

That is just not true at all

Jones was perfect for Bent, he used to get a lot of attention off the defenders, allowing Bent time and space

You must have a short memory, because Bent was a million miles better next to Jones than he did without.

Fletcher and Defoe would be ideal IMO, he has to try it at home against Burnley and QPR, I think the fans are getting frustrated and if we see Defoe totally isolated like Fletcher was, people will start to turn.
