Defoe

Said which youth players would be on bench and that PVA would start against Leeds, and said those 2 lads were going to Blackpool on permanent deals

That wasn't me mate. I knew that Poyet had cancelled a media appearance to have talks with us shortly before others were reporting it, but I can't remember if I posted it.

 That still won't be enough for some of the negative buggers on here though.

That's not the debate though, is it? It clear Defoe is better than Altidore. Question is, is he the right man for us at the moment?

Not claiming to be ITK here but I've just had a mate ring me to say he's had a tip off that Defoe is signing for us tomorrow. He has no connection to Sunderland this lad so would be a random one for him to make up. He wouldn't tell me who is source is, but through his job I imagine he has a few decent contacts.

Just put £20 on it at 2/1 in case - he's put £100 on it.

Will wait and see.

If he signs today marra you're going down as the BEST ITK ever on this board.

He is replacing Altidore though, so comparing him to Jozy makes sense

One has a 1 in 3 strike rate in the prem, one has a 1 in 34.

Good deal
The main issue is supplying him with chances, SKP was a similar type of player to Defoe and they both needed the chances to score as they won't necessarilly go looking for the ball.

Proven goalscorers a hard to come by for a club in our position. If there's a better option available I'd love to know who.

Plenty of times this season we have passed the ball across the back or centre circle, been closed down, the ball inevitably ends up back with the keeper who punts it aimlessly towards a centre forward.

It worries me that we won't use him to his full potential. He is not the type of player who will fit the current system. He needs a supply line. We create fuck all. I can't imagine him getting a sniff unless we change the way we play. I don't think Gus has it in him to mix it up.
I would say it was a characteristic of Defoe game that he creates a lot of chances for himself when he's on song. He is a streaky player but when at it he just needs to be given the ball somewhere near the box. He scored goals when there wasn't really much on, just with clever movement and shifting the ball a little to get a shot in. He's a bit ball greedy but theres nothing about his game to suggest hell struggle to get goals and all of a sudden be past it.

My worry is that there seemed to be a plan, and that appears to have gone out the window. A 32 year old on a bumper deal? If every time we get into trouble and we do this then it's going to be a very expensive method. It's not my money to spend, but at the same time when there's no money left in the pot for future deals there can be no complaints. There's no doubt Defoe was a quality player in his pomp, but he isn't there any more.

On the subject of there being a better option available, I've no idea. We've got an international scouting network, and if the best they can come up with is Jermain Defoe, who we could all come up with off the top of our heads, then the transfer market is well and truly goosed.

If people are happy with the name and the big money then that's fine. If you think he's still go it and he'll be a real coup then fair enough. Hopefully he'll score a few for us. It just seems a confused signing to me. I hope I'm wrong.

Whats the latest then, just about deal done ?

I think its going to be a great signing, for the rest of the season anyway, the reason being, we have an up and coming young striker in wickham that has shown what he can do, just needs a confidence boost now and again, fletcher that has been around for a while now, and needs a run in the side and will score goals, and as for defoe he has all the experiance to score and provide the goals to keep us up....
