Defoe

We shouldn't believe reports but 70k a week for 32 year old is freaking insane and a complete sign of desperation like putting your last 100 quid on a roulette spin. Defoe has always been up and down and without some of his pace he used to have in a team that creates about two chances a game from open play the signing is a f***ing disaster IMHO.
So we should just accept we are going down and not try and fix our absolutely pathetic goalscoring problem? Instead we've signed one of the PL's most successful strikers, and people still moan just because he'll earn a lot of money.

I can't believe we've swapped altidore for jermain defoe, all hail congerton

This. If this deal gets over the line, which it looks like it will, this is a major improvement to our squad. Notwithstanding his age,Defoe is experienced, mobile and an instinctive goal scorer with a proven record at this level. To swap Altidore for him is a great bit of business.

as i understand it. MLS are buying Antiscore , what they do with him after that doesn't effect us . Not sure if " we won't sell JD un less we get a striker" comes into play though , perhaps someone could help with whether toronto can say who they sell or not as i don't know
Just now in the echo

SUNDERLAND are hoping to confirm the capture of Jermain Defoe today after effectively sealing a straight swap deal with Jozy Altidore for the England striker.

Defoe passed a medical in the North East yesterday after agreeing to return to the Premier League with Sunderland, following a breakthrough in negotiations with MLS outfit Toronto FC late on Tuesday night.

The move is expected to be rubber-stamped today, in time for Defoe to feature against Spurs at White Hart Lane on Saturday – after the 32-year-old has ironically spent the past week training with his former club.

There have been indications emerging from Toronto that Sunderland are paying a £6million transfer fee for Defoe, while recouping a portion of that investment from the sale of Altidore to the MLS itself, who are then expected to franchise the Black Cats flop to the Canadian club.

However, the Echo now understands that Sunderland have not splashed out ANY extra money to land Defoe than they will receive for Altidore.

Sunderland have essentially just conducted an exchange of strikers, rather than a player-plus-cash deal.

The Black Cats have made a big investment on Defoe’s wages though, with the 55-time England international due to become the club’s highest earner.

The contract is thought to be markedly lower than the £80,000 per week which has been mentioned in some reports, but it is a measure of chairman Ellis Short’s continued support that Sunderland have beaten off competition from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, Hull and Leicester to land Defoe on a big-money deal.

Defoe only joined Toronto on a four-year contract 12 months ago, but he has been eager to return to the Premier League and was looking for a permanent move, rather than a loan switch.

Head coach Gus Poyet hopes he will provide the answer to Sunderland’s attacking woes, with the Black Cats netting just 18 goals in 21 Premier League outings so far this season.

Sunderland have also been able to remove Altidore’s wages from the books; ending the US international’s miserable 18-month spell at the Stadium of Light where he has netted just one Premier League goal.

Toronto have not bought Altidore outright, due to the franchise system in operation in the MLS.

The MLS itself will pay for Altidore’s transfer fee, before the league gives him to a club using an allocation process.

However, Toronto are ranked higher than both New York Red Bulls and Portland Timbers – the other interested parties for Altidore – in the allocation process and are confident that the 25-year-old will be playing for them when the MLS season gets underway in March.

Certainly, sources in Canada believe Toronto will have had some indication of Altidore’s arrival before sanctioning Defoe’s departure.

Altidore, the subject of loan interest from French side Lille and Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen, has started just two Premier League games for Sunderland this season and the Black Cats have been eager to offload him this month.

straight swap Defoe for Altidore . £80k a week minus the £35/40 k Altidore was on

take their fooking hands off!

A nearly passed it Defoe is still 100 times better than that rubber dogshit yank.

As long as the lad scores goals who gives a rats ass how much he is paid and who we swapped him with let's start winning some games, sick of these bloody draws

Just need the Pic of Defoe holding the scarf aloft now.

I am still baffled how anyone would know how much he'll be getting paid  pure speculation not that I really give a toss either way

i know from his side of things how much he was after, that it was a gonna take close to that to get him and that safc were outbidding other clubs

also, as the mafia say " three people can only keep a secret if two of them are dead" agents etc have big gobs. it only take one person in one of the 4/5 clubs teams of people dealing with it to tell a journo . thats about 100 people who know exactly whats going on to get JD , at least

more than likely someone from hull or qpr told a journalist , rather than someone at safc, given that we were still negotiating

 Whats desperate about signing a proven goalscorer with a turn of pace and decent movement?

He's injury prone, possibly not the right type of player to use in our current system, we have no idea if he's still the same player and he has an eminently slappable mush.

The latest reports on the length of contract, his wages and it being a straight swap deal are easing my worries a little.
