The Bank Clerk Who Went To War
50 years ago today David Steele made his test debut in the 1975 Lords Test against the Aussies and blunted the formidable attack of Lillee and Thomson
I always thought that he changed the course of the Ashes series that year with a number of brave innings
England were heading for the wrong end of a drubbing until Steele’s selection and were unlucky not to square the series in the end which they probably would have if the Headingley test had not been sabotaged by the Free George Davis brigade
The 1975 series isn’t one that isn’t spoke about much but for a 10 year old watching his first home Ashes series, it’s one I’ll never forget
