50 years ago today David Steele made his test debut in the 1975 Lords Test against the Aussies and blunted the formidable attack of Lillee and Thomson
I always thought that he changed the course of the Ashes series that year with a number of brave innings
England were heading for the wrong end of a drubbing until Steele’s selection and were unlucky not to square the series in the end which they probably would have if the Headingley test had not been sabotaged by the Free George Davis brigade

The 1975 series isn’t one that isn’t spoke about much but for a 10 year old watching his first home Ashes series, it’s one I’ll never forget

Remember him well.

First time he came in to bat against Australia, Rod Marsh said to Dennis Lillee "I didn't know your dad was playing" :)

Just before my time as far as cricket is concerned. 1977 Ashes series and Randall's cartwheel is just about my first memory of cricket

I was at Lords in 75 and saw his debut. He walked out, nearly at the end of the 2 minutes, as if he was in the wrong place. How wrong everyone was. Story goes that because he was in the home team dressing room, and not the away room as normal, he took the wrong turning and ended up on the toilets. That is perhaps why he was a bit late onto the pitch.

Batted in a cap and played Lillee and Thomson off the front foot.

An inspired selection in Tony Greig’s new England

Those were the days, where you could be in one series, then out the next because there was a new selector who didn't like you.

I suppose the decision was vindicated as we won that India series, and the 1977 Ashes.

No different to today. Sam Hain doesn't play golf never gets picked. Better than Ian Bell.

Bethell loves golf and gets picked, not even good enough to maintain a place for Warwickshire.

Nothing has changed.
