Dan Neil

Well at worst Patto and Neil being back in the Championship has me watching more games at that level.

Id already forgotten how enjoyable it is.

Jack Clarke is one for me who can 110% make the step up. His 1st season there was pointless mind.

Id have him on our left atm ahead of everyone bar Le Fee.
I really liked Clarke but not convinced he'll make the step up. He had opportunities last season and didn't take them. I think if he makes it in the top league it'll be as more of a workman like type of player who gets up and down the pitch and puts in a shift, rather than a flair, dribbling inside forward. I just don't think he has the ability for that.

Not wanting to reopen this but how would anyone know, he's never had an opportunity
Yep I'm not saying he is or isn't, but you could apply the same logic on Dan Ballard if he was only given the odd sub appearance, and he's looked miles better in the Prem than the Championship for me.

You can argue the staff see him in training etc etc, but opportunity plays a huge part in perception, and I think Dan Neil gets more chances if he was on a long term deal.

Clarke carries the ball past Championship defenders for fun. However, his game is heavily reliant on this attribute. In the PL, only the highest quality wingers can do this - good wingers in the PL generally require more of a mixture of attributes. I agree that he will struggle to repeat his Championship form in a much tougher league.

I think the club made an assessment having watched him play many games in the championship and in training. I'm more convinced he can't make the step up now than before a ball was kicked in August, after watching us compete in the premier League. The bar is so high.

Hear hear Marra, we don't know really - as said earlier somewhere in this thread many thought Dan Ballard and Trai Hume wouldn't step up and they have and Dennis Cirkin has shown that (when fit!) he can make the leap too, so why not Dan Neil?

I trust RLB and his and the coaching staff's opinions and they obviously didn't see him making the step, but never to be given the chance will always leave me with a what if feeling. Hopefully he gets to prove his point in the years to come, certainly I wish him the very best of luck.
Hold on a min no evidence Cirkin can cut it at this level. No prem club wanted Neil and people were wrong about Ballard. Hume is a good squad player but i suspect if funds allow he will not be seen as first choice next season???

The contract bit is fairly irrelevant, if the staff thought he could give something he would have had some minutes. Yes Xhaka plays there but even on the rare occasion(s) Xhaka has been subbed Neil didn't come on for him. Anyway, good luck to the lad.
I think it is relevant, we found minutes for Rigg, Mundle. Neil would have been given more minutes if he was under contract next season, I'm certain of it.

He’s a top championship player, it was never in doubt. Hes not premier league quality but there’s no shame in that. Glad he played well.

No one knows about the premiership capability bit.

The lad was frozen out because for contractual reasons, anyone doubting that only has to look at minutes played compared to other unknown quantities from last season be it Hume, Ballard, Roberts,Rigg, or even O9. ( we have had more cover at centre half than anywhere else)

Was he a Granit Xzaka ,,, can’t see it, did he have Sadikis energy … no, had he got Le Fees class … no
Could he have contributed as much as Diarra and Gerrtrudda in midfield ? I guess we will never know.

I think top end championship is his level but no one can argue he wasnt given any chance to prove himself in the prem… and that might be all his fault !

Agree with this as well. Ballard is the only one that has proven that he can perform consistently at the level required for a starting spot. Cirkin has had some decent games (Man City, Leeds) and some bad ones (Brentford, West Ham). It's a bit harder to judge Hume as he has been filling in all over the pitch in unnatural positions.

You can not explain why a player who was available for sale attracted not one prem offer??

Or they rate the players you mention, Reggie didn't freeze out Watson last season or cirkin this season

Whether he's good enough or not is very debatable however for me he'd have done a better job than Rigg* has done in the opportunities he's been given (wide and centrally)

* I still rate Rigg but he's miles away from PL level

I think Cirkin and Humes time in the starting 11 will be limited going forward. I think Hume is a functional right back i do not think Cirkin will be at Sundeland next season. People have differing opinions so what who gives a monkeys🤣
