Dan Neil

Far too often, games seemed to pass him by, and he was often ineffectual & rarely stood out, even at Championship level.

We've since, signed players who are levels above him, and even if he'd signed a new contract, I'm sure his game time would've been very limited, anyway.

I'm not forgetting his contribution to our rise from League One to Premier league, and I thank him for that and wish him well, at whichever club he opts, to continue his career in the game.
I'll ask again, how could he be our most crowned MotM, in a promotion winning season, captaining the side if " games passed him by " He carried the Team through the middle third of the season and was utterly fatigued by the end of it.
He should go down as a true star of recent seasons.

He actually calls him a lovely lad and says a bit more than I remember. He does say he wanted him to be a bit more positive, calls him a 'steady eddie' and that he pushed him really hard to push the ball forward and effect the game a bit more, when at times he just wanted to take the ball off the fullback and keep the ball, pass it back to the centre back etc.
B-but but I thought all the incisive defence splitting play had been coached out of him?
So he rejected a contract (I assume he wants to play more than he would which is fair enough)- but that also means that for us- it's not going to be in our best interests to play him- he could get injured or he just might not be as motivated to play to his full potential (I'm sure he'd be professional, but it is what it is). Köln would be a great move for everyone, offer then a good deal with a sell on clause.
He got his boyhood club promoted to the PL and can always call himself a premier league player now.
Just like Milton Nunez.

He started last season abysmally, but that middle third, as you say, he was excellent. Didn't quite reach those levels at the back end of the season but still played his part. He'll leave with my best wishes. The gulf between Xhaka, Sadiki, Diarra and even Geertruida is just massive and we're better off for it.

I do think we’ve outgrown him, but people forget that particularly in the first half of last season he was very good

He got the most votes across the season in MOTM polls, which isn’t too shabby at all
Even Dan Neil doesn't think Dan Neil was very good in the first half of last season. He's on record saying as much.

He had his best spell over Christmas, then tailed off again.

Something happened. You could see the difference between how he played the game when he came into the team and how he played at the back end. He struggled with being moved further back into the 6 position when he came in as more of an 8. That's when we started seeing him get caught on the ball, red cards etc. Doesn't necessarily mean the coaches were telling him to play safe etc, but it took him a long time to look comfortable there.

Only according to the daft polls on here.
Stats don’t lie but I can’t be arsed to dig them out
Chunky's parsnip polls or Opta, which is the more reliable?

Here are his stats, which also include a handy algorithm. When placed against others who play a similar position, interesting discussions can appear. One in particular is that a player who would never play in the championship is personally having a better season than he did so far. @The Cabbage

Irrefutable evidence for the supremacy of the eye test right there:lol:
