Dan Neil

Eh?

I’m not desperate to hold onto him at all, we should sell him for his own sake.

Can you not even read?

I’m objecting to the personal abuse you are labeling at someone who should be a legend

Just unbelievable after all we have been through as a club that people still target the players who got us here

Poor fans like you wouldn’t be watching Xhaka or Nordi of it wasnt for thr likes of Neil,,Roberts, LON etc

You should have more respect, its just really really poor behavioir about players who got us here

Honestly reminds me of the day mags go on
Legend ?

A club legend is a highly admired player known for exceptional skill, loyalty, longevity, and significant contributions (like winning trophies or scoring crucial goals) who embodies the club's values and leaves a lasting legacy, becoming an iconic figure for fans long after they've left. Key traits include deep loyalty, outstanding performance, making big moments, and representing the club well on and off the field.

i dont think people are saying neil is a world beater. more that he isn't as bad as people are making out

saying he struggled last season is just silly sausages

He did to be fair, everyone around him raised their game and his at the very best stalled. It was a poor season for him personally, and it has undoubtedly led us to where we are now.

Dan Neil has scored or created a goal on 30 occasions in 180 games for us at the lower levels. 1 in 5, Obviously if he was a regular in our Premier League team those stats would go down, he looks like he might score maybe 2 a season and assist twice.

Then look at all of the other things you would expect from a competent Premier League midfielder to do well.

Tackling.
Passing.
Pace.
Heading.
Running with the ball.
Awareness and positioning.

Is he really good enough for this level ?

Don’t think anyone really has a problem with Dan Neil like. He’ll want more minutes on the pitch but RLB doesn’t think he’s as good as other options, so we won’t be offering first 11 wages - so he’ll want to leave for more minutes and is therefore running his contract down if not sold.

It’s standard and happens everywhere.

He goes with my best wishes when he does leave as I do think he’s a very good championship standard CM. Whether he’s good enough for the prem I don’t think so, but I thought that about O’Nien, Cirkin & Ballard too and they’ve started well - Ballard especially.

RLB clearly doesn’t think Neil is good enough for his system either so it’s a bit of a waste keeping him beyond this season imo.

this is it. we all want a Sunderland fan and local lad to do well, we should all agree on that without argument, but he’s not getting past the others in our squad in his position.

hope he does well wherever he goes to but he’s not a prem player and he’s not goin to take us to the next level. mid table championship player without a doubt

Areet Mr ChatGPT.

Best all round for Neil to move on. Been a good servant to the club and helped to get us up where we are. Should be grateful of that. But he's not good enough for where we are now. Should leave with good wishes. I think Rangers would be a great move for him.

never thought I’d see Dan Neil labelled in the same capacity as the likes of raich carter, bally, shack, buchan, holley, monty ….you need to stop putting vodka on your cornflakes marra

what did Bally do more like?
Another thread ruined by the inability by the usual suspect who is unable to accept that posters may have a different opinion to theirs. Calling Neil a club legend is absolutely crackers mind.

All the players from league one to the prem are legends aye, absolutely no doubt about that. So LON is not either?

You wanted KLD, Speakmand and RLB sacked or removed so I take your opinion with a pinch of salt
Don't forget club legends Liam Lawrence and Jeff Whitely anarl there marra.

And wharrabout Sean Thornton. Raptastic.

None of them tooks us from the 3rd divison to the first in 4 seasons did they

So aye they aren't.

But these are.

He had some very poor spells last season tbf, he was getting pelters on here.

This board wanted KLD to leave and for Speakman to be sacked mate.

Its not got a barometer of what is going on.

If you look at the quality we have in his position then you have to say he is about 6th choice behind Xhaka,Diarra,Le Fee,Geertruida,Sadiki,Rigg. I would even go as far to say Regis would put Gume in there ahead of him too. Dan Neil in my humble opinion isn’t getting past these players and it would take some serious drop off in form and injuries for this to happen.

Actually captained us to two Division 1 titles.

Played in an FA Cup Final.

Captained us and scored goals in the Premier League.

Gave us ten years service as player, then came back as a coach.

Was an uncompromising leader. Hard as nails. Never gave less than 100%.

Bleeds red and white despite being from the opposite end of the country.

Neil's nowhere near him to be honest.

I'll be eternally grateful to those lads, but lets not get carried away.

And Neil barely kicked a ball under Alex Neil. Getting Dan Neil out of the side was a major factor in us getting our act together, getting hard to beat, and ultimately getting promoted that season.

Some were saying CIrkin and others from last season not good enough to step up
They have ( when given a run of games /opportunities )
Yet now some are keen for DC to sign a contract -be great

I am nto getting carried awaym those from league 1 to the prem are legends, just like the players who did that from the late 80s are.

Its not very controversial, just goes to show how people are immediatley taking for granted where we are

You'd think 5 years in league one might make people slightly more humble, but clearly not.

We have bloody Xhaka playing for us!

4 years ago we were in league one.

Ask yourself how that happened.

I've been surprised that Hume, Ballard, Cirkin have performed so well, in fact i'm surprised we aren't in a relegation battle ! It's been an excellent season so far.

The other thing about Neil is though, while others have been given their chance while the AFCON lads have been away, Le Bris has chosen not to use him.

I'm not sure on the assumption that he would have been happy to be a squad player?

I think the shame for us would have been had we not gone up and we believed he still had potential and missed out on a fee.

Entirely fair enough, however, to suggest Neil's game time as baffling, is well ott IMO there.

Maybe baffling was dramatic, but I do think not giving him a chance was a bit of a missed opportunity that could have benefitted us. There's been games this season where we would have had little to lose by giving Dan Neil a look for half an hour.

On being a squad player - yes, an assumption. But based on the fact that he wanted to stay at Sunderland this summer, even when he was clearly being phased out and has always chosen to stay in the face of consistent speculation about his future. I think given his background and relationship with the club, we could have convinced him to stay for another year so he could play in the Premier League for us.
