Dan Neil

Is this where the few remaining Neil holdouts come to mingle?

Lad didn't want to sign a new contract and Rigg is better.

I do agree that he isn't a def mid though, he should be much further up the pitch... so that when he does his shite 180 turn and loses the ball he only gets a yellow instead of a red for trying to make up for it.

Because he was moved to play the defensive midfield pivot role, the most specialised role on tbe pitch and if you'd actually watched games ladt year you'd have seen he often did still carry the ball forward into an attacking position. In fact identically to how Xhaka plays the same role.
Didn't miss a home game marra and saw a season of sideways and backward easy offloads and not the ball carrying maestro you suggest, whatever role he was asked to play.
You can't teach vision and speed of thought and he lacks both as evidenced by his constant ponderous loss of possession - the footballing equivalent of the quarter back being sacked.
Perhaps it's you that should have been watching more closely?

Possibly was me and everyone else who had him as MotM in majority of games last season. Strange they would give that to someone with ponderous loss of possession.

Been totally chucked under the bus by the club. I understand hes not ahead of the new boys in the pecking order and i very gratful of that tpo be honest as we'd be in trouble if he was.
However to not get a look in and see the likes of onein and rigg get on before him is a terrible humiliating slap in the lads face. Hes better than them 2 by some distance. The lad was our captain ffs for 2 year.

Today i hope he plays 90mins and Granit gets a rest, as hes looked tired and leggy the last 2-3 games for me.
He's turned down contracts the club have offered, i guess the club is in the right not to use him as much

They don’t want him to stay

It’s just the constant f***ing digs at him by Sunderland fans for no reason

None of this season would happen withoit the likes of Dan Neils

Disgusting post, no way are you a Sunderland fan

And another

We really have some truly awful awful fans,

Must say some people do slag him off, but don't really see the issue with those two posts you quoted. Just someone's opinion on his ability.

It is a discussion forum after all.

Do you think Riggs better??
Rigg has a much higher ceiling than Neil and has committed his future to the club. For that reason alone I can understand why the club are prioritising more game time to Rigg. On a footballing side, even yesterday I don’t see who drops out of the midfield for Neil never mind if and when everyone is available. That said, for all he’s done for the club and being homegrown I’d love to see Neil get a game in the PL for us and perform well. Football is a brutal business though if you want to continue to improve

Football is a brutal business and for too long now this club has been treading water and for a period, going backwards.
Not any more.

Poor lad deserves better this season. Put in so many good performances the last couple of seasons and Regis picks Rigg ahead of him. You can’t tell me that Rigg offers more to the team than Neil does…
I am in this camp I think Neil better player than Rigg. Not sure Rigg is going to be top class in PL yes I know he has age on his side but I don’t think he will be strong enough just my opinion. Good player world class not in my opinion

What point are you trying to make?

Aye, let’s start him just because he was here when we got out of League 1.
That fans have short memories. The lad was an important part of our rise. Cost zero and added quality to our midfield. Also he's better right now than chris rigg. No way does rigg merit game time in prem yet Neil hasbt had a sniff. I think club has treated him badly

There’s been an opinion that has become an internal justification amongst the fans - and potentially within the club - that Neil cannot possibly operate at pl level. It’s not one I agree with, personally. It has felt like the club doesn’t even want to check its assumption at times this season. Definitely too late now though.

Id wager that dan 'safc fan through and through' neil would crawl across broken glass to play for us in prem. Yet theres people on here suggesting he's knocked back a couple of contract offers from us as if he's some sort of prima donna. Im genuinely disappointed for him he cant even get the chance to show what he can do. He 100% deserves it after being our captain and leader for last few years. We piled alot of pressure on the lad given his inexperience and seemingly couldnt give a shit about him now. Doesnt sit too well with me tbh

True. If it wasnt for players like Dan Neil we'd be in league 1 still. Is that the point your making aye?
He was an integral part of the recovery from those wilderness years and for that he has all of our thanks. If we want to sustain top flight status and become established, he is sadly (for him) just not good enough. He should be playing football. I agree with the club stance, it won't be here.
