No one is saying people can’t, and it is fine people want to volunteer. The point is they shouldn’t have to as the club should already be doing it. If the club owners did their jobs properly then there would be paid staff dealing with litter etc and there would be no need for volunteers.

If Tesco said they were going to make cleaners and shelf stackers redundant and would rely on volunteers instead, would you be happy with that?
Let’s not ask stupid questions. I don’t shop at Tesco anyway.

I don’t think anyone expects volunteers to build the south stand extension but I think there is mileage in litter picking and tidying planting etc around the sol. In an ideal world should the council be doing it yes but given the cut’s councils in the north have received I think Sunderland council do a pretty good job on the whole.

I was talking to a mate who is from hull and was at the game last week. His words were the stadium was magnificent but the area surrounding it was grotty.

If people want to commit some volunteer time to improve the area it should be encouraged. Easiest thing in the the world is to sit on a keyboard and complain.

Let’s have some pride in our club and area.

If you dont drop litter you don't have to pick it up. Just a thought.

We went to man city the other day, on their stadium tour and to the bayern game. I know they are loaded and are champions but they have the whole fan experience and facilities absolutely bang on. It's just a nice place to go and watch football, from the outside there's plenty of space and a variety of kiosks and plenty of covered spaces all clean as well. Inside the ground again there's plenty of space and it was a piece of piss to get a beer. To think they were pretty much like us until the takeover and now they are a huge club.
And their Stadium was built for the Commonwealth games and took over by City from Manchester Council at no doubt a bargain price.

The Stadium of Light was one of the best stadiums in the country when it opened. While of course aging is inevitable, it's sad to see it slowly fall behind but the only way to rectify this for the demand for improvement to be matched with success on the pitch.

The shaky existence of our club with promotions and relegations have neutered the demand for it to be renovated or expanded further.

Is Joans Cafe still there?
If not where is nearest greasy spoon where one may enjoy a fully loaded fry up.?
What is nearest boozer to the hilton, colliery tav or the wheatsheaf?

It's the little things. A hand dryer in the toilets has been broken for months now. That's just a minor thing that is easy to fix but would it ease the congestion in the toilets at half time and after the match if it was working.

I am not saying it shouldn’t be encouraged. It is great if people want to. The point is they shouldn’t have to.

Neither the Club nor Council will bother doing anything to change the situation if fans do it for free.

If the Council say they aren’t going to do bin collections anymore would you be encouraging people to volunteer to do it?

I didn’t ask if you shopped at Tesco (I don’t either) I asked how you would feel if they didn’t bother paying people to do stuff because they could get could get volunteers to do stuff for free.

Local electricians and fans should volunteer to fix it for free, according to some on here.

I was back up at the SoL for the first time in a number of years last Saturday and although below the stands could do with a bit of brightening up the stadium its self looked in decent condition to me. The surrounding area from the Sheepfolds & Wheatsheaf which I accept isn't the Club's responsibility was however letting the place down. I am sure that just a decent clean up & a bit of bright street art with some football themed murals would help. The two stone bridges that cross the railway must be as old as Monkwearmouth Station (1848) itself & could be made in to features in themselves.

The "dirty back lane" experience that visitors are currenly subjected to just isn't in the interests of the City & the image that it needs to project. When SAFC arouses national interest it boosts the whole of Sunderlan'sd economy so if we are thinking "Premier League" in the next couple of seasons - if not sooner - you have to be prepared.

In contrast I went down the Roker sea front on Saturday morning and I thought that it was really looking good. The cafes looked far superior to your average sea side town greasy spoon and they were thriving with lots of people taking advantage of them & the lovely weather. It was obvious that a lot of effort has been put in to the entire front along to Whitburn. As a lot of seaside towns and their sea fronts have become very neglected in the UK Sunderland could well end up as being known as having a very classy one. Good to see the old tram shelter at Seaburn being put to better use. It is a lovely structure but sadly for many years it has only served as a rain shelter it is certainly worth making more of a feature of.

So lets not have any excuses & get that area between North Bridge Street & the SoL sorted,

Sheepfolds is all getting flattened and replaced by housing, I think.
