James Rew opening the batting for Somerset today, maybe a hint at who they want to open in the first test. Out 3rd over of the day for 4.

Feel for him as I'm sure he'd be a great success at test level at 4-7.

But it's the only way he's going to get England honours anytime soon. So needs must I guess.

He's not an opener, he's a huge talent but shoehorning into opening isn't going to do him or England any good. He will need to wait patiently, Smith needs a good series against NZ to keep his place and if he doesn't, I'd bring in Rew for the Pakistan series.

Which is the likely outcome but after a poor Ashes and second half of the summer last year, he should be under some pressure to perform against NZ. Rew is next cab off the rank in the middle order but not a chance would I have him opening.

He was absolutely dire in Australia against what was mainly a 2nd choice attack,aggregate 211 runs from 10 innings with static uninspiring wicketkeeping. A few bazball innings earlier on shirt fronts brought premature euphoria. Promising but,as yet, unproven

Would be very interested to know who made the decision to stick him there, was it a hint/suggestion from team England? If it was, it seems to suggest Gay may not be next in line.

Feel for him based on today, van der Gugten had it doing alsorts and it was astonishing Somerset went to lunch just one down. Thomas played and missed at about 20 balls in the first hour and I swear that isn’t an exaggeration.

Elsewhere, an intriguing contest at Edgbaston where Brook is unbeaten overnight on a handy 29 and will resume tomorrow with Bairstow. Yorkshire are 37 behind with 6 wickets left.

Looks like a result pitch at Old Trafford too, if Jimmy Anderson doesn’t take wickets first thing tomorrow Middlesex could take control of that one. It appears Lancashire have an even bigger problem with Durham regarding their change bowlers being ineffective.

Exactly this notion that he is under pressure is nonsense imo, the bigger picture is that he has a great start to his test career apart from a terrible series against the Aussies away from home.

He not be the first or last to do this he has started this season well and is a absolute fantastic talent.

He is the exact type of player we should be sticking with for the long term and supporting after that very difficult ashes as he will come good no doubt in my mind

That said Rew a terrific player too, rightly or wrongly think they will find a space for them both imo

A balanced view would be that you only become a fantastic player when you have proved you can perform against top opposition on challenging surfaces. Hopefully Jamie has,a level headed view
A promising prospect undoubtedly but over hyping can be harmful

Yeah that’s why I said he a fantastic talent he is not a fantastic player as yet.

imo somebody with his talent and potential should be developed and supported and not be considered to be supposed off and under pressure over one bad series in a place where many many good players have a also had a bad series.

Under pressure is solely media speculation. The fact that he's batting early order for Surrey presumably at his own request and showing more control indicates that he's identified limitations in his own game. Probably a victim of the one sided Bazball doctrine.
