Well I thought that was a great round of first games and another great advert for county cricket.

Worcestershire remarkably held on against Somerset after looking dead and buried.

Essex couldnt quite finish off Surrey.

Hampshire made a commanding start against Yorkshire

Advantage kept switching between Lancs and Middlesex throughout the 4 days

Bashir against 2nd div Leicestershire in a 10 wicket defeat

Bashir22.0292090001504.18
One to watch is Jack Carson at Sussex, was trainin with squad before Bashir, and took 5 wickets in div 1 this week (in the game)
4-92 on a flat one for Carson and seems to have improved year on year. Can bat too. Farhan Ahmed at Notts is another one to watch.

Yeah Wisden cricket said he was training as back up to leach for a long time with England then had a poor spell on n off pitch so they went for Bashir.

He can bat and field

Ahmed looked good I admit was accurate, strange run up like!

Yeah just seems a much better bet than Bashir at present. Ahmed toured with the Lions over Winter so they clearly like him.

Just a bad series though which can happen to everyone. He's been fairly consistent otherwise and is more likely to at least tie down an end than the other options.
Pretty sure the last Ashes down under Leach in the first test went for over 100 of just 12 or 13 overs ;)

Seriously though don’t think this current England regime rightly or wrongly looks to just tie a end down, they don’t think like that

Yeah I recall them getting on top of him during his first spell and no doubt they'll try the same but they will with any spinner and I think he's the best equipped to deal with it. Probably didn't help during the last Ashes that Robinson could barely get through a test either due to lack of fitness which put greater pressure on the rest of the attack.

Totally agree with your second point but it could be part of their downfall.

Yeah I agree mate he is probably best of a bad bunch and definitely the best option to tie an end down and bowl tighter than the rest.

But don’t think the Aussies will be concerned about him in the slightest.

In fact and tin hat on, depending on the wickets and how they play and what pace bowlers we have fit and available it may be a option to play 4 seamers and Root or even Bethell if he plays to bowl some spin.

Such is the lack of quality spinners we have available.

I have been very concerned about our spin options for years and they not getting any better.

Unless somebody really comes through this year

Leach did nowt in Pakistan tbf.
I'm not sure I'd agree with that entirely. I think he made an ok contribution.

In Pakistan in 2024 he was England's highest wicket taker by a long way with 16 wickets. Although tbf he bowled a lot more than most. He averaged 31.43 which was ok. Bashir bowled 16 fewer overs and took 9 wickets and averaged 49.55. Bashir was the weak link if anything.

I don’t necessarily think either are good enough tbh. They were made to look like amateurs compared to Pakistan’s spinners.

He was clearly better than Bashir but on wickets that massively favoured spin bowling.

The two Pakistan spinners made him look very ordinary imo

Can’t judge him off that mind

That series was a joke with Covid and they didn’t pick him at all in the year before

The one ashes be played at home he did well

Yeah

People may think leach is not world class but he’s a pretty good spinner and a lot lot better than Bashir

Has anyone seen the Doliveira LBW in the Som v Worcs game. It is one of the worst I have ever seen comparable to the one asked Stewart got in Sri Lanka. Umpire should be sacked on the spot
The umpires were Paul Pollard and our very own Martin Saggers. Don't think it looks like Saggers, from the back
