Council Tax Rebate

Still waiting for ours (Durham Council), wouldn't say we needed it but it'll be welcome and will likely be spent on a local Indians and the rest in the local working mens club so at least it's going straight back into the economy somewhat.

For those who got it did how did you know? Does it just show up in your bank or do you get a text or letter to tell you when it's going in?

Do you have to have paid the DD for a certain amount of time to be eligible? Me and my lass moved into our home last January and been paying it since then.

I believe As long as you were in your property as of 1st April you'll be entitled to it. As you've been set up for DD's since then, the council have your bank details & should get it automatically

What if you moved in in May last year but pay Dd

This is a reply I got yesterday from DCC:

The first Bacs payments were sent yesterday to hit the bank Friday. They will be rolled out in batches over the next week or so

So it should hopefully be with you soon.

If you're suggesting they just take the money from council tax payments, the admin behind that adjusting everyone's account will be horrendous.

If they're making bacs payments every day as part of their normal business then adding some more onto it isn't going to cost more

Even your previous suggestion of giving the money to the electric companies would be a nightmare from an admin point of view, as they'd then need council tax bands from the entire country to look up against their customer base.
It would be relatively easy for councils to take off council tax bills - wouldn’t be horrendous at all. Councils did it the previous year with the hardship scheme for council tax support recipients.

The bacs payments is the easy bit, it’s getting the bank details / ensuring no duplicates / records match etc. that’s the nightmare.

If the government made it a council tax rebate, then yes reducing council tax bills would be easy.

It's the fact that the grant is for something else makes it a faff on crediting every one's council tax accounts from council funds to ensure everything is accounted for correctly.

Last bit I agree with, my point is that its easier councils doing this than it would be for energy companies.

• Over the next two weeks, County Durham council tax payers who pay their council tax via direct debit, will receive the government energy grant of £150, paid into the bank account from which they pay council tax.
• If a direct debit has only recently been set up and the first payment is not until May, the grant will not be made until after the first direct debit for council tax has been made.
• The council will be writing to every household who does NOT have a direct debit set up for council tax payments at the beginning of May, asking them to apply for the grant payment via the website and they will be asked to provide bank account details for the payment to be made.
• Alternative payment methods will be offered for those who do not want to be paid by this option (payment voucher or a credit to their council tax account)
