Council Tax Rebate

A) you have to give £150 back to anyone paying by direct debit. The council have no choice, they can't offset it against the Ctax liability. So....Sunderland are going to deduct the first instalment from bank accounts and then have to pay it back. All by BACS, every transaction costing money. Why did the Government not say offset by default but give the money to anyone who wants it.

B) anyone not on DD has to apply. Most Council's have 60% on DD, so for Sunderland that'll be 40000+ applications. Not many Council websites will cope with that volume of traffic

C) The government have stated that checks need to be made where the name on the Ctax account isn't exactly the same as the name on the DD mandate....which will be administratively a pain in the scrotum. There'll be maiden names, spelling mistakes, parents paying, children paying, landlords paying etc

Why did the Government not instruct energy companies to rebate energy bills.?
Why did they privatise them in the first place?

For those in Sunderland who like me haven't had it yet (even paying DD, from the same account, for the last 15 yrs) I managed to speak to someone the other day.

What they said was it was being done as batch processing and there wasn't really rhyme or reason In the roll out according to the person I spoke to - for example my family, same postcode and surname as me have all had it. She said "everyone's saying that and unfortunately it's just being done in random batches."
What she did say was that they intended to pay everyone who's been paying DD for ages (ie not new DD people, or people who don't pay by DD currently) by end of this week, but its moved to the right and it could still be a few weeks into May for those of us who were supposed to be in the initial roll out

They told a friend of mine that it was being done by date the DD comes out. So if you pay on the 1st your are the 1st batch etc

Well if mine doesn't go In tomorrow, then I'll have paid 2x months worth of council tax (next payment next tues) and still not have got it

Mine comes out on 28th, but I got mine in the 1st batch 3 weeks ago, so don't think that's true
No doubt giving out all kind of shit information.

She hadn't received hers either. Turned out it was as DD was in maiden name. And council account in married. Happy to take payments like that but not refund. And no one was doing anything about it. Would have got nowt had she not rang them.

Just rang the council line and choose anything else.

Mind, like the safc line, if they're busy they just hang up on you.

Don't see why I wouldn't get it cos I qualify, but the automated line says, and the lass confirmed, they have no way of telling individuals when it'll be.

Which is about as much use as an Ash tray on a motorbike tbh

It’s a massive task for councils. If like the Council I work for we are prioritising getting as many out as possible, so any anomalies like above they may be delayed as just haven’t got the resources to manage with this. My advice would be not to phone for a couple weeks until dies down. Everyone eligible will get the payment no one will be overlooked.
