Conning the ref

You can't point to anyone who is universally agreed with as a ref, as Collina was, so without doing a ridiculous amount of work on case studying the refereeing standard, you can fairly easily point to a time it was better.

That is one person. Ive also heard James Richardson who is pretty knowledgeable on Italion footy saying he reputation in his homeland where he did the vast majority of officiating was pretty ropey.

I know the refereeing has been poor this season, but one thing that seems to be underemphasised is the rampant cheating that’s going on. It’s a hard enough job as it is, but when you throw in the cheating it’s hardly surprising standards are so poor. Seems like the football world is keen to bemoan refereeing standards and VAR, when if players just played like men and didn’t try and con the ref I’m sure standards would be a lot better.

Hardly a hot take but it does me head in how much we just accept the dark arts.
Not just us, the commentators and so called pundits too.
'buying a free kick', 'entitled to go down'.
What a load of shite, they're legitimising cheating.

Great point that I hadn’t considered. The euphemistic language is part of the problem.

You can actually hear them screaming over the crowd noise and the commentators as they are brushed past before doing a minimum of three rolls on the ground

as long as you have fans (and pundits, journalists, players, managers, coaches and every other person involved in football) , but especially fans - like most on here - who think 'contact' equals a free kick, then diving will never stop

you'll never, ever stop that though, unless the threshold for what is deemed a foul is raised.

at the moment, they feel contact and they go down. they scream and writhe around in pain to exaggerate the foul as they know the contact alone wasn't enough to knock them over.

it would have to start with the FA punishing players retrospectively, on a case-by-case basis for cheating

all this shite when a finger brushes someone face and they roll around crying for a minute, if the ref doesnt' give a free kick then they should be fined after

Their should be retrospective action, especially on players going on like theyve been shot, the suddenly jump up when they dont get the decision.

100%, but just like everything else, its not black and white is it.

a player could get caught on the ankle, no foul, but a pit of pain for 20 seconds. he sits on the deck rubbing it in for moment and gets up and carries on and could get a fine after the game

all it would introduce would be another layer of punishment / non-punishment and conspiracies and unfair bias against the smaller teams

I’m definitely in favour of retrospective cheating charges

I’ve got this on me tea towels.

I thought it was incredibly topical, given the current spygate, but the link may not have landed.

This is where I struggle with a lot of it.

In many cases, I believe players are entitled to go down. When someone is running at the speed of a train, and they anticipate contact, I think they should go down as opposed to planting their leg, happened with Ronaldo all the time.

VAR should implement a 'fanny cam' system where they can pause the game if clear and obvious cheating like a fanny is apparent. They can recommend the ref issues cards for foul play, and they could even show it on the screens. That Southampton goalie last night for example would have looked a right tit flouncing around in slow mo.

i don't think anyone would be against it

but it would just end up a total farce, like everything else

first few games of the season, big focus on it, big punishments (as long as its not one of the big clubs), then it would just fade away. or we'd be shown two 'identical' incidents where the punishments were different. or they'd fine someone for diving and it would later turn out that they really were injured

Been following this club since early 60’s and never have fans been happy with refereeing, be it here or at other clubs.
Social media have just amplified this dissatisfaction, albeit common sense and objectivity have been thrown down the toilet. The inmates have taken over the asylum

Some dives are so obvious though and it pisses me right off when pundits make light of it as if its a joke, look at Cunha against us on Saturday, on ref watch on Sky they were giving him marks out of 10 as if it was the f..king olympics, just get him banned for 3 games.

i remember us getting a penalty at wolves when seb larsson dived. it was a proper blatant dive that most could see but for some reason the bilnd as a bat referee gave a penalty. just about everyone round us just laughed at how bad it was. i was quite pleased we missed.
