Charlie Methven

Last Saturday he was down at Argyle along with John Macevoy and one other. Obviously lots of rumours that he has a group together to take over Argyle with him already having already gone over things like the new academy being constructed. My question is what can we expect if he takes over and is it a good or bad move. Just wishing to know your opinions Good or Bad
He will tell anyone who will listen that it was his strategy, business acumen and hard work that took Sunderland from almost going out of business to the premier league.
As others will note doubt be saying, not much of what he says is based on facts.

I hated the wanker ever since he swore at that woman on Sunderland til I die about the attendance. Proper jumped up little prick. Thinking he was someone important with his pink trousers on
in his defence she was absolutely useless
The person in charge of driving revenues ‘he wants to get 40k attendance, he’s mad’, attitudes like that were rightly called out and she was rightly dismissed
Can remember another scene when he was discussing with staff something he’d sent to them about how much the club was losing he asked who’s read it and that clown Tony Davidson and co sat there without a clue clearly not giving a shit
Him calling out this behaviour and culture was just what was needed
His big mistake was what should have been his biggest ally, the fans, he decided to condescend and belittle, when the pressure kicked in after the first season he decided to lash out at the paying public, it’s never going to end well after that
I do however think him not accepting those attitudes of people going through the motions in their role is spot on

Agreed

A lot of cost cutting and patronising…. You are outside London do you are thick.

There are only two positives out of his tenure.
1. They saved the club from bankruptcy through cost savings ( but nearly killed off club in process)
2. They brought the current owners into the club.

Overall they were out of their depth being at a club this size with their resources

I think he’s alright.

Everyone goes on likes he’s some charleton looking for a quick buck, but he’s been involved with 3 football clubs and now this would be a 4th?

So he’s obviously a football man. He’s not buying distressed window cleaning businesses.

He was part of a group that took over us at our lowest ebb, the club stabilised at a dreadful level of football, took a harsh austerity lesson, but ultimately emerged far, far stronger for it.

I think if it had not been for Methevin we’d have a) sank worse than we actually did, recognising relegation to league one happened under Short and b) we wouldn’t be as strong now if it weren’t for him.

In 2005 I was arguing with SMBers about Sir Bob Murrays legacy. I’m sure time won’t heal as much as it did a local businessman who did so much for the city and the football club for so long as Sir Bob did, but regardless I would expect a softening of attitudes in time.

We could have sank worse than we did, he did take action to prevent it.
Other than handing over a stripped back organisation he had no role in where we are now imo, he didn’t have the resources or the vision for that
I don't think he's a football man, but I do think he's found a niche in distressed football clubs.

He's the most prominent person in a group of people that will help stabilise a club. That group aren't going to have Plymouth playing Premier League football within five years, but they'll get the club into a better position for other buyers.

As a person, he's a prick.

That’s a good overview for our Plymouth friend

He attracted Satori to invest in SAFC, who in turn attracted KLD to invest, we've been on a fantastic ride since then.

He went to Charlton and they were promoted, I think he may have stepped down before the end of their promotion season however.

He is a classic example of a private eductaion. The older I get I realise that what they teach is supreme self confidence and belief along with the ability to bullshit their way to the top.

Methven has all that self belief with none of the ability or skills to back any of it up. If he went to a comprehensive he would be an unemployed petty criminal by now and possibly homeless.

So keeping them would have got us back up quicker?
Maybe? Maybe not?
The point is that Madrox didn’t care if we “got back up” at all. They were after a quick flip and profit which meant cutting outgoings to the bone.

Maja, Mumba, the kids etc all had to go to prevent them investing their own cash. They were so clueless that they undid all the vast financial gain of refusing to buy new batteries for the office clocks by blowing the lot on Grigg live on camera with their own employees not believing what they were seeing.

Lee Johnson apparently bought a pack of Duracells at a petrol station after his first day because he got sick of looking at the wing time. STIDs obsession with Baines watch collection was as much about the office wall clocks as Baines vanity.

I admire contrariness as much as the next puss taker but sometimes it’s best to keep your powder dry marra as it gives the game away.
Selling Josh Maja and not giving him the contract offer he was looking for and signing Will Grigg for more than we would ever have had to pay Maja to keep him, think that was the one decision that made a massive difference in Promotion / Staying Down.
I’m as sure as it’s possible to be that with a fit Maja we’d have been promoted in the first L1 season.
The model didnt come with KS and co.
We have always done that
But never as a method statement made public.

If SD/CM hadn't taken us over when they did who knows what would have happened. So what if they saw it as business or a quick kill, it was them who got Juan onboard who in turn got KLD and we are where we are today.
