CC : Durham v Nottinghamshire

That cover drive he’s got is a thing of beauty, the first boundary of the day was a touch too short to drive and was a bit aerial and had my heart in my mouth because Hameed was lurking - but he’s smoked about 5/6 since which have been sublime. There was one off Stone where he didn’t even follow through, just dead batted it through the covers. Absolute beautiful timing.

See a lot of similarities with Jennings, maybe it’s just the tall left hander thing, but the touch with which he’s nudged two balls through the vacant fourth slip region as a release shot when everyone else would’ve expected to see him unleash a vicious cut shot have been as impressive as any drive he’s played because the best batsmen are able to change gears at will to suit themselves and keep bowlers and fielders guessing.

If that seems like a pretty thorough analysis on the basis of an hour or so of batting, fair enough, but I’m a badger and it’s the first time I’ve seen him in the flesh properly (since I played against him :p)
It's clear to see why he's highly rated by England. I've only seen him a couple of times but he definitely has the natural ability to go far, there's not many opening batsmen in the county game right now who can play those shots we've seen from him this morning on a regular basis along with the high strike rate.

He's someone who probably should have scored a lot more runs in 2XI, but he's always had the tendency to throw his wicket away in a soft fashion by going for one shot too many. I'm sure that's something which will improve as he gains more experience.

Hopefully the signings of Gay and Rhodes for next season don't limit McKinney's opportunities and chances to develop, that's my only worry.

Yep hopefully he makes it a very difficult decision between now and the end of the season.

Fingers crossed the murmurings about Lees aren't true mind.

Yeah, agree with the sentiment in the last paragraph. I think people like Borthwick and Clark probably need to be more concerned mind, but it’s brilliant to have such depth and competition for places.

There’ve been a few times this morning where he’s probably played a positive/aggressive shot to a ball which wasn’t really there to go at and on another day he’d have been in bother but apart from a couple from Hutton early doors - where he got a little bit of nibble in the corridor - it’s been fairly flat. Interestingly Harrison has turned a couple though, not massive, but gentle turn nonetheless.

Was talking to someone recently who knows the McKinney family and they’d said there was a frustration that he’s making nice 20’s and 30’s regularly but not going on to big scores. That ton in the One Day Cup was hopefully the catalyst for bigger and better things and is also another nod to why that competition is so vital. Plenty of players who have had good campaigns in that competition are playing for their counties today.

Lunch:

Durham 121-0 (30 overs)

McKinney 74*
Lees 45*

Fantastic session.
Looks like they are changing the ball after their 4th protest of the morning. Embarrassing this

Been rumoured for weeks I mentioned it on here and to @The Red Telephone a few weeks ago. Yorkshire sniffing about is the craic

Ah right, must’ve missed that one. Would seem a very odd decision by him to go back down there from a purely sporting perspective to be honest - plus I can’t imagine the money would be all that different given the state of the finances down there.

Only other thing I can think of is travel, but it’s hardly like he’s from the other half of the country.

Well I was half right as the ball has been moving all over....mainly to the boundary !

I think it’s clearly been a brilliant toss to lose, not sure what we’d have done but suspect given some of Badger’s decisions this year that he’d have done the same.

Pitches to the side of the ground it is are traditionally flatter than towards the river, but with the moisture around it seemed a good idea at the toss to bowl.

Hopefully the bastards don’t take a wicket until tomorrow morning when it does start hopping
