CC : Durham v Lancashire

I was thinking how well we are doing on the over rate, then I forgot the scheduled time for stumps is now 5.30.

Good day all in all. Hartley and Hurst looked in no bother for the last hour or so which is good signs for us to bat tomorrow

, can only imagine they want to use Hogg the last 2 games

I understand the need for some overseas and some good pros, but we’ve taken it too far in my opinion, 3 more arriving next year.

This Holder should not be playing ahead of Minto, that’s not what the club is about

Wagner or Bolland? Absolutely. But not this type.

Minto is away with England U19s

Must be his twin brother on the pitch today....... .... I guess you must mean will be away with U19s.

It appears to me that this West Indian lad was a desperation signing.
We have made some rash overseas signings in the past but this lad takes the biscuit although he did take a catch

Minto was 12th man today at Durham number 77. Hogg was carrying the drinks
If he has got a number on his back he must have signed a pro contract albeit probably a rookie/development deal. I would guess the youngest player in Durhams first class history to get one.

Just checked and this is actually his first summer even on the academy staff. So i would imagine that the first team coaches had probably not even seen him bowl even in the nets before early season.

I noticed that crapinfo had Holder down as right hand fast, but he looked pretty slow to me. He didn't look any faster than Ben Raine and had none of Ben's control

see how it goes tomorrow. Got to say Holder just looks out of his depth, remind me of the Ali Dia episode at Southampton.

Ben Raine was unreal today.

Get them for less than 250 has to be the aim.

Ah fair play.

Then Hogg this week and Minto a week he isn’t

Signings like this aren’t for me, never agreed with them

I mentioned early doors that they may simply be managing Hogg’s workload. He played in two games, did more than ok, but I’ve got no qualms with him being rested given he’s new to the First Class game.

On Holder as a whole, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. He was way off today, no doubt about that at all, while the other three seamers were going at less than 2 an over he was going at 8’s - it was a massive release of the pressure and an undoing of the hard work at the other end - but he may produce a spell tomorrow morning or in the second innings which effectively wins us the game and secures our status in the Division.

I stick by what I said yesterday about the signing. People will have their own opinions of the state of West Indies cricket, but they’re still producing some very decent quicks (Kemar Roach has been a valuable asset for Surrey for a few years now and Seales and Joseph did alright down under last winter) and this lad has got a Test cap to his name. The introduction of the Kookaburra ball has led the club to thinking outside of the box in order to take 20 wickets and as Marty referenced in the build up, we haven’t actually managed to do that yet with the Kookaburra. I reiterate what I said in the New Signing thread - whether it pays off or ends up being a catastrophe, I cannot fault the intent.

Regarding the game, I think it’s more or less been proven that it was a good toss to win - even though it didn’t really appear to do much more than any normal day in the season. The first wicket seemed to be a nibble at a straight delivery in the corridor, the second was Raine at his best, tailing it in to a left-hander from around the wicket. Iyer was beaten for pace whilst hanging his bat outside off at one he could’ve left. Ben Raine bowled magnificently, but his better balls didn’t take wickets - and not just because Graeme Lloyd has an agenda :p - and generally none of our lads got any sort of outlandish assistance from pitch or conditions.

Potts and De Leede worked hard and were equally impressive IMO, they just didn’t get the rewards their efforts deserved.

It’s very much a case of sticking to the old adage of waiting until both sides have batted, but I think that the Lancashire batsmen for long intervals showed that surviving was very possible. From what I’ve seen it makes the bowling effort all the more impressive, especially the discipline. It seemed clear that we had a gameplan to bowl very tight lines the three seamers outside of Holder did that impeccably.

The one thing that has puzzled me mind is the Lancashire tactics. I’m not sure what their plan is? Perhaps it’s just to try and hang on for dear life for a draw? For long periods today they went absolutely nowhere and whilst they were able to build partnerships fairly easily after the first hour in terms of balls faced and time spent at the crease, when they did lose a wicket they’d barely added any runs. They lost their 6th wicket in the 53rd over for 138 and you have to believe that when we do come to bat, if we get to the 53rd over we’ll probably have 230-250 on the board. In the 24 overs that followed the loss of Balderson they added just 39 more runs. Tom Hartley has been considered a bit of a white ball specialist with the bat and he was very aggressive in India last winter - today he faced 83 balls for 15*

Big day tomorrow, we get the new ball in 2 overs time, hopefully we can secure maximum bowling points and be batting by Lunch. The visitors may get to 250, or even 300, but they will need to seriously up the pace if they’re to get there in time to get the bonus point(s) available. Hopefully the Sun shines after lunch and our lads make hay.

Enjoy reading your summaries of the days play, good stuff.

Lancs got stuck and a bit low on confidence after a few early wickets

Raine really is a top class bowler like. I wish he’d played more in the 50 over stuff, we’d have got through.

Thank you :)

Having read the cricinfo report, I see that Lancashire haven’t scored a batting bonus point since 1 July - so clearly you’re right when you speak of low confidence.

At 138-6 they probably feared not getting any batting bonus points at all, the partnership at the end atleast makes it look likely they will do, but all that considered I still expected a touch more urgency given they’re 10 points behind Notts. With a draw here and if Essex beat Notts they may gain enough points to climb outside of the relegation zone, but it’ll be more or less a straight two-game shootout from there and one of Notts’ opponents is Kent.
