Carlisle United


Stokoe was manager when I first went, in ‘84. Should’ve went up to Division One that season, second top to Chelsea in mid-March but didn’t win any of the last 10 games and came 7th. Just for context, the two top scorers in Division Two that season were Kerry Dixon and Mark Hateley. Dixon was English football’s top scorer the following season in Division One and went to the World Cup with England 2 years later. Hateley scored for England in the Maracana that summer and joined AC Milan for £1m, he also went to the World Cup in ‘86. Carlisle were up there with crowds of 3,000 in comparison! Stokoe did an unbelievable job.

It was Alan Ashman who got Carlisle into Division One in 74/75.
 
They're an odd club in a nice part of the country with little in the way of competition with a fairly nice city I'm not sure how they're not a solid mid to lower midtable championship club.

Population maybe? Carlisle is about 100k but that includes the likes of Wetherby. The wider area is mainly rural and most people to the east of them are going to support the Mags.

There’ll be even more SE clubs crawling up the pyramid and into the FL in the future. If it’s within an hour or so of Londonnits desirable for certain types. Most have been getting it wrong but the law of averages dictate that the more that attempt it etc.

A side note:
Hateley and Wilkins only went to Milan becos Marco van Bastens mam was diagnosed with cancer after both he and Gullitt had agreed to go. MVB pulled out so RG did anarl. Milan needed a central midfielder and centre forward sharpish so pounced on em both. Once MVBs mam was ok both MH and RW were moved on.

Truro like all SW clubs traditionally lose a lot of players when they rise to the national level of the pyramid.

I'm not sure that will necessarily be true in the case of Truro, simply because they already have so many journeys of around 300 miles, or even more, at Step 2. They would miss their derbies with Torquay, of course, but there are maybe only three other clubs (Weston super Mare, Bath and Salisbury) within 200 miles.

Travelling to Altrincham, Rochdale and Oldham aren't really much further than the likes of Ebbsfleet, Maidstone, Eastbourne or Tonbridge, while Halifax and Fylde are maybe the equivalent of going to Chelmsford (and probably an easier journey).

So, it's only really maybe four, possibly five, games - York and Gateshead (one of whom may go up anyway), Pools, plus Carlisle and Morecambe if they come down, that would be significantly further than what they get in NLS.

Is there a reason they don’t pick up support from the lakes area and places like white heaven etc
 
Don't want them to go down, they do have a great away following and my club would suffer financially if they went down as they would if Morecambe go down. Any two from those two and Tranmere to drop it looks like.

There’s decent numbers come from west cumbria, and south west scotland aswell. Truth is though, Cumbria’s not really a footballing county, the lakes area certainly isn’t. West Cumbria has traditionally been a rugby league area but even that’s dying a death.

It’s been mentioned locally! 440 mile. It’s 90 mile past Exeter and only about 30 from Lands End. Certainly won’t be going there and back in a day!
