One of my chilli plants seems to have a load of white flies on the leaves, I really want to act before the rest of my plants are infected. Any diy ideas I can have a go with before the time it takes an Amazon delivery? I’d post a pic but my Imgur account appears to have been disabled. @DaveH @Butcher's Coat
Thanks
When I had this I used a very weak dilution of detergent in a spray bottle and it worked

I did this was dish soap last week and absolutely fucked my chilli plants. Every single one ended up with black, dried out leaves and look dead as a dodo 😢

What Nookie Bear said, but you can get food/veg safe bug sprays and to be honest I’ve tended to use that. I get a lot of black fly on my beans. What you have is aphids.

One thing that can sometimes work is putting a few dabs of jam on things. That attracts various predators which eat the jam and then eat the aphids. I’d say I’ve had a 7/10 success rate doing that.

Thanks @Nookie Bear rang my dad and he said weak washing up liquid in an atomiser.
I’ve ordered some gear on Prime so I’ll see what comes first, be gutted if it spreads as I’ve dedicated this greenhouse to just chillis.

Finger and thumb and just squash thd buggers marra.
The jam idea works too. Attracts wasps that'll eat them.
I also plant marigolds inbetween crops as a sacrificial plant. Aphids love them and go for them before the plants. Strip them bare, but I grow hundreds from seed every year, so costs next to nowt. Three or four in the greenhouse too. Works for me.
I Don't use any pesticides at all mate.
Wasps and Ladybirds are my best mates.

One year I had the bright idea to put our chilli plants in the porch at old house and got infested with aphids , could barely see through the windows there was so many

I’ve just been reading that basil might deter them, I’ve got a load of that in my polytunnel, do you think it’s worth putting a couple of pots in there?

Sorry, it isn’t veg I know but does anybody know what this is with the little pink flowers? I guess it’s something most people would treat as a weed, as it is pretty prolific but we actually love it. Just need to keep on top of it to make sure it doesn’t totally overgrow other plants.

I would try just water them every other day. Cutting back to every 3-4 days could cause them to potentially bolt if it’s sudden, as they’re used to regular watering. When we had an allotment we just watered every 2-3 days, usually just due to our availability more than anything.
Thanks marra.
Took your advice and they seem fine. No sign of bolting, and all the leaves are greening up nicely.
Think you saved them for me👍👍👍

Happy days marra 👍 my shallots done the same, couldn’t think why, turns out my wife had been watering them with the bairn every day after school and then every 2-3 days they were getting a good soaking off me on a night 🤦‍♂️

Onions always been an issue for me.
When I started growing, I put them in really rich soil, and they just bolted. Fucked.
Since then, it appears I've been overwatering and the crops have been really small.
I think I might have struck gold by asking for advice on here.
Thank you mate.

Anyone know a good/cheap place to buy seedlings? Near Peterlee preferably!

All my beds are 4" mulch with woodchip, so I cannot direct sow anything. And all my seedlings failed this year, experiment was a total fail!

Would be good if I could at least throw some plants into the beds to get caught up.

You tried facebook marketplace?

the missus cucumbers have gone mad this past week or so. Got 3 that have gone from about an inch long to about 8 inches long.

I'm feeling really good about my veg patch now. I struggled for enough time between work and home schooling during the covid years, then had a broken hand and torn ankle ligaments last year in two separate incidents, so I did grow stuff but it didn't get the attention it needs. This year was a slow start due to the very cold and wet weather we had early on. The ground was so sodden I think any of the earlier seeds (like parsnips) would have just rotted.

I've had things like potatoes, parsnips, carrots and beans out for a while, but had not even cleared the beds for things in the greenhouse to go out. Did all the digging over in the heat on Saturday and that was knackering. We had a thunderstorm and heavy rain all night, leaving everything nice and moist for planting. Got almost everything planted out on Sunday morning and the things to stay in the greenhouse potted up into the big pots after I had cleared some space. More rain in the afternoon got the outdoor stuff bedded in nicely.

Hot day yesterday but humid and didn't dry the soil too much, the another big thunder storm this morning. If we can have a day of rain and a day of sun for a while that will be perfect. I think if I had got stuff out earlier, then I'd have been planting in the dry scorching heat like I did last year, and would have lost a lot of stuff. Shame there is still a lot to do in the rest of the garden, but signs are I'm going to have a good veg year.
