Calling SMB veg growers

Leeks, onions and cauliflowers in today. I know it’s a bit late with some stuff but the missus bought far too much for her plots and my initial intention was to just prepare my bit and plant stuff in autumn but I got ahead of the game. I reckon I’ll get a cracking crop of butterflies and some very small carrots and potatoes!

I have just built the exact same one. Needs glazing but we’ve had thunder storms and all types of weather the last 2 days so it was on hold. Better today so I’m gonna try and finish it this morning.

Looks like you bought the base too aye? I pondered then just built one instead. Basically sat on top of some sleepers.

Think it was a package deal that they did on the base. You got the toughened glass version? I picked up some big pieces of glass and two of the small shaped ones dropped out that were in between the big pieces so move the glass one piece at a time is my advice. I also had one that exploded in my hands as I was just about to place it. Some choice words were said then!

No I got the normal. I may replace them with toughened when they start to go, or maybe I’ll regret not just getting the toughened in the first place.

Cheers for the breads up about the glass, it’s certainly something I wonder have checked! So far so good, will let you know if I have issues/need some advice as you’re a bit further forward. I have had it in the garage about 16 months :lol:

The good thing about the toughened glass is the size of the panes, no overlapping the glass on those little clips. First greenhouse we got had them and I glazed it in the pissing rain. That was fun.

Ahh really? I didn’t realise, thought it would install the same. I’d rather not use the clips tbh. Bit late now like :)

Saving a couple of quid will prolly cost me more in the long run :lol:

Edit. Looking at your pic I can clearly see the difference in the glass sizes…

Repotted my peas 2 weeks ago, they all look about dead now :(

(was too cold/windy at the time to try to harden them off)
 
How long do people harden things off for. Been taking my peas and a number of flowers out for a couple of days. Looking to plant next weekend.

Growing melons for the first time this year and just moved them to bigger pots. So far looking good.

I tried that with just a melon from the shops - nowt! Did you get specific seeds ? I couldn't find any.

I just put in some of my brassicas, cauli, turnip, sprouts, then built a cage with pipe/bamboo and netting around them and my peas to stop the pigeons. Weeded around my onions, heaped up soil on tatties (1st & main) Dahlia bed uncovered. It's been a busy day and boiling hot !

The birds were singing non stop and my flask of tea was lush, what a day !

It was just seeds from Suttons I got.

You sound like you are ahead of me. Feels like I started 3 or 4 weeks late. We were still getting lots of frosts, and loads of rain. As well as the ground being wet and heavy, it chucked it down for a few weekends in a row. Got my parsnip seeds in today, which is really late for them, potatoes in last weekend, onion sets in today but quite a bit getting close to hardening off and then planting in the greenhouse. Just as well, I'm running out of space and seed trays.

Done it and only managed to break one piece of glass, just a corner so tab of silicone until a new bit comes. Those spring clips are an absolute pain in the arse, fingers were burning for a couple of days :lol:

All I thought about when building it was I shoulda got the toughened :lol:

Aye, the clips are a nightmare. You get a good run with them but then one proves to be a right twat that pings halfway across the garden!

Toughened glass in this one which is a lot heavier than the last one. Already been tested with the wind and survived no bother.

Looks excellent!

Even normal glass (3mm?) is preferable to to the old agricultural glass which is like sugar-glass. I've started recycling my glasssheets so that any broken panes on the sunny sides (east-west-south) of the green house are replaced with ones from the non-sunny north side. I then replace the north side with 4mm twin walled polycarbonate (which adds a bit of privacy but can be used on the other sides if you have a nosey neighbour)

The greenhouse came with 3mm toughened but I had to get 4mm toughened replacements for the bits I smashed. Supplier I used don’t do 3mm, known in the industry as Chinese toughened.

I usually start them in a plastic gutter filled with compost on the greenhouse about now. Harden them off for about a week, then slide them out of the guttering into a shallow trough in the bed. No need for repotting. Don't normally plant out till end May. You've got time marra. Worked every time for me.

And you cannot cut toughened either. I just got Robsons' near the SOL and get normal window glass about £7 for standard sheet (610mmx610mm).
