I have some nasturtiums given to me (seeds) - it seems you can eat them.

PS I seem to only to be able to grow shrubs/bush like plants. I have the best hydrangea and some other fantastic shrubs, but my bulbs come up blind, my pot plants die, my veg get eaten by slugs and I've only ever succeeded with sunflowers once (eaten or sun shrivelled the rest of time).

Flower heads and leaves are good in salads, quite peppery, watch out for catapillar eggs on the underside. Pickle the seeds and use as capers.

Was a lovely day yesterday. Got my tatties and onions out, along with some parsnip seeds. All under fleece at the moment but I feel like the gardening season has begun.

I am going to be struggling to get anything in. I have a couple of hours tomorrow morning to try and get something in to seed trays but it is not looking good for this year's harvest. I won't have any chance to do anything else for a few weeks, and I think I would have missed the boat by then.

Plenty of time marra- don't worry.
It's a busy time, but don't get too uptight. Plants catch up. My allotment neighbour is always in a rush to get things away early, and my stuff always catch up with his.

Get some spuds in the ground soonish - my 1st earlies went in last week.
2nds and mains are chitting away in the shed - and will get planted out in the next week. The main crop will go into the ground, and I have potato grow sacks for the 2nds.

I have got onion sets in modules in the tunnel. Also in cold frames I have got spring cabbage, sprouts, caulis, leeks, purple sprouting broccoli in seed trays.
The parsnips went in the ground last week too. I shall get some winter cabbage away around the end of the month.

As for swedes & turnips, they can go direct in the ground soon, plenty of time for that. End of the month will be OK for outside sowing direct. Thin out when they are large enough.

Also in large planters I have put in carrots, Chinese cabbage, lettuce & radishes.

Broad beans sown direct from last October have survived the frosts & snow and are doing well. I will put another row of broad beans in this week. A couple of rows of peas went in direct last week too.

Garlic are in a cloche and are showing through, shallots are just showing their tips.

In the tunnel I have sown carrots, spring onions, beetroot in guttering and also more peas in guttering. A few more sowings of beetroot can be made in a few weeks time, as peas too.

I shall be setting away runner beans & French beans in pots in the tunnel soon. I always sow a "mugs row" of runner beans direct at the start of May. If they come through, all well and good, if not, the ones sown in pots will go into the ground late May.

I am going to try some sweetcorn too this year. They will be getting set away in pots in the tunnel soon.

My tomatoes & aubergines are doing well in my porch & windows sills back in the house. They will go out into the tunnel around May day.

Here's hoping..........

It's February, it's time to be thinking happy thoughts about what you'll be planting and eating this year.

I grow from seedlings not seed as I don't have a greenhouse and also have some time constraints. So just put my order in for:

tomatoes
summer cabbage
savoy cabbage
broccoli (calabrese)
purple sprouting broccoli
sprouts
celeriac
courgette
leek
pak choi
peas
broad beans
dwarf French beans
runners
aubergine
chillis
butternut squash
sweetcorn

Heavy on the brassicas this year. Love my brassicas me like.

@Cowvahlo @spitfire
I know there are more of us veg growers, sorry for not tagging everyone, can't remember who else is in.

I've no idea if there now are seedlings available but something I used to grow, from seed, was Salsify - a lesser known veg but has a beautiful delicate flavour.

I see we have frost forcast 10th and 11th April here (Nth Yks)

Somebody has been busy  I thought I was doing well this year

Well here we are end of April and I've never known such a long spring, warm at the start, cold at the end. My first daff was out in early Jan, my last daffs are still at their peak now. A three and a half month daff season, who'd a thunk it. Round here (south east London) bluebells grow like weeds, and it's been a cracking year for them.

On to veg. This weekend I will be planting out summer cabbages, pak choi, spring flowering broc, broad beans, calabrese. This weekend we will be eating the flower heads on the purple kale planted last summer - yum yum yum. Still too early for the sprouts and leeks to go out. Now worried that the real high summer stuff - toms and sweet corn - may not have enough growing and sun time given we are I reckon about a month behind.

My pride and joy the espalier apple trees are just coming into blossom.

How's everyone else doing?

No chance I will get anything planted this year now. The weather is hopeless and I am not around to take care of them. Got some flower seeds planted last time I was at my Mum's, but I think the cold is just going to nobble them.

Apologies for going off at a slight tangent but for anyone in the Sunderland area and interested in the old green finger stuff this is well worth a visit.

Not a tangent at all, all garden chit chat welcome here.

My tatties and onions are doing well, and the parsnip seedlings just coming up. Everything else is in the greenhouse. The broad beans are getting too big for their pots and should go out in the next week. Got some carrot seeds in too. The weather seems to be going from roasting to freezing so it is difficult to know when to plant out.

We've got seedlings of tomatoes, Peppers and chillis and planted seeds of aubergines. Early days yet but the aubergines were tremendous last time.

I have only ever managed one small aubergine. Do you grow them in the greenhouse? Do they need much care other than watering?

You'll be pleased to hear that I've added you to my scrumping list.
