When buying from a dealership, is there a minimum period of time they have to have left before the MoT is due?

No. But I would expect them to mot the car before taking possession.

If it's a decent car/dealer ask for a full one if less than 4 or 5 months left

Thanks, lads; just thought I had heard that these days there is a minimum. The one I'm looking at is tested till November, so not a massive issue.

An MOT only shows a car is roadworthy on the date it was tested. In your case 3 - 4 months ago, a lot could have happened ti it in that time.

I would insist on a full 12 months MOT its peace of mind for you and some protection for the dealer.
