Of course it is, time and time again people are complaining the ECB have changed this focus to to shorter format, when in reality it is a worldwide thing, every country has done that.

Kids in India will want to play in the IPL and the West Indies have more focussed on the shorter format for years.

The whole of cricket in almost every country in the world has put more focus on T20.

Only a silly person would think otherwise.

All that is happening is we are finally catching up as most nations have been going that way for some time. Emotions run high though when the Aussies beat us and rational thinking seems to fly out the window.

That's not to say ydays performance wasn't woeful mind.

When this all changed imo was when KP came into the England side in place of Graham Thorpe. He was basically a slogger but carved out a great career had such a good eye & a pair of balls.

I don't really agree with this. KP had a good defence, he could leave a moving ball an often the early part of his innings was quite calm and then he would go through the gears. What irrates me the most is those that look at FC records and automatically think the bloke who is currently getting runs with what looks like a good FC record must automatically be the 'next cab on the rank'.
Fletcher and Hussain did a piece on selection and Hussain said that Fletcher would never look at county averages. In English seaming conditions against 80mph bowling players could carve out a good career by basically being good on the front foot and a good leaver of the ball. However that never prepared you for test cricket where the bowling is quicker and the lengths often shorter. Any player selected must be comfortable off front and back foot as well and therefore a good judge of length. It didn't matter whether they were aggressive batsman or defensive as long as they had that criteria. Alec Stewart (before Fletcher) Vaughan, Trescothick and many others were selected on that criteria despite very modest FC records at their time of selection.

So it changed when we brought in a player who was superb and played a major part in us beating one of the best test sides there has ever been?
