Boro thread

Which game at Boro was it when just on kick off, Safc fans seemingly came out of every part of the ground to get in the Clive Road end ? Never seen as many do that at an away match since.

Might have been the Hedley game ? Don't think it was the 0-0 game when we were on MoTD as we were the only top tier game that day ( quiz questions - why was that ?? )

Ooof, Elliots "tackle" on Cochrane🤣🤣🤣

Gibson is some bloke to be fair
He’s pumped a quarter of a Billion quid into the football club to keep it sustainable
Incredible
Lost £500,000 every week since relegation in 2017.
Losses £258 million over last 10 years.

I don’t know how people on the Radio Tees phone ins have the gall to criticise him.

Yes it was the 0-1 Hedley game.

The other game I think England maybe had a qualifier on the Wednesday and us 2 had no players involved. Hungary iirc ?

Wasn't the Hedley game where your mate Joe Bolton sparked out Terry Cochrane and got sent off ??

Remember duffing this game as playing footy in SSL (game kicked off midday iirc) and being gutted when we were two up that I wasn't there. Hadn't missed a Boro 'derby' away game since my first taste of it in the fa cup defeat in Jan 75. Typical I thought, but by end of game was relieved as we held on for a draw by our fingertips !

Come on Wev.
There’s a big difference in the amount of slack ( and trust ) a foreign billionaire with no knowledge of football will get , compared to a local man like Steve Gibson or Jack Walker at Blackburn.

Plus Gibson has been subsidizing it for 40 years now. God knows what happens when he’s had enough.

To make it clear, the majority of owners of football clubs in the football league 'subsidizes' the club. Not many turn a profit. It's how it is. Boro and Steve Gibson are no different to nearly all clubs.

This whole Boro will struggle financially when Gibson leaves is just naive and wrong. When he's had enough, whoever takes us on will spend what they are willing to spend - more or less. Gibson doesn't do it to keep us "alive" he does it to make us better and aim for the Premier League, he chooses to make a loss in an effort to get promoted. If he wanted to he could run us entirely differently. See Stewart Donald after Ellis Short.

Fortunately his money has seen a major trophy and European football. Something most clubs haven't seen 👍🏼

He was much shorter term compared to Gibson -who has single handedly kept Boro moving .( local lad so probably gets the club as well ?)
Think most fans of most clubs would want a Steve Gibson.
As you say for the size of your club he’s had you in Europe and win a trophy -incredible job he’s done

Point being, owners get questioned and scrutinized in football at every club over decisions, ticket prices, who they pick as manager, where money is invested etc. Literally every club.

Think he’s well respected and liked by fans of other clubs because he’s local -has great longevity and shows what can be achieved with stable ownership .
For size of club to get into Europe was an incredible achievement.

How does Gibson afford it? I always had him down as a Bob Murray local man who did well in his business type. Yet Murray couldn’t afford to keep funding us in the end whereas Gibson just seems happy to keep putting decent money in every year. Is he a billionaire? Can’t imagine he makes a lot of money from Rockliffe Hall? I did hear a while ago all his companies are linked so he pays into boro to reduce his tax bill as it shows him making a loss not profit.

He is worth £650m I think and is probably willing to commit a greater proportion of his wealth into the club than most.

Bulkhaul profits have surged in recent years so I think there is that security for him.

Thanks. I knew he had a ‘transport’ company but I was thinking a few wagons or something. Didn’t realise it was as big and successful as that.

According to my brother who is a smoggy ST holder, Gibson's wife absolutely rinsed him in a divorce settlement resulting in him having to significantly reduce the money he put into the club, he only recently generated the wealth he had pre divorce. He has a much younger model on the go now and hopefully a decent pre-nup

It's not a major trophy. European football fair enough.

Where do I say it’s major trophy. 😂 I’ve seen us win a trophy at Wembley. 👍🏻 Have you?
