It is true though that Boro fans are feeling cautiously optimistic about our promotion chances this season. If we can get Hamilton and Conway through the door we are going to have some very strong attacking options, and there is still talk of Ryan Giles possibly returning. He was great for us.

I agree . I do my league ladders on seasons eve, for all 4 divisions. I currently have you between 2nd and 4th , alongside Leeds, Burnley and Coventry .
The two doubts I have is if they dont make the top 2, they are renowned bottlers in the play offs, AND I get the feeling that Latte Lah may have had an 8 week wonder spell ? I think he only got 5 goals from August to March last year.
Defence and midfield both look strong. ( as long as they still have Jones, Hackney and Van den Berg at the end of the window)
Conway is a 1 in 4 , and this Hamilton I dont think hes played a domestic game yet, so cant comment
 
Whenever there is a debate on here comparing Sunderland with Boro, it strange how appearances in competitive European matches are never mentioned by Sunderland posters.

The facts make interesting reading:

Sunderland have amassed 4 European appearances in total (all over half a century ago).

Boro have accumulated 25 European appearances (and all within the lifetime of the vast majority of their supporters).

Sunderland's total is level with Coventry, Hull and Sheffield Wednesday.

Less than the likes of Birmingham, Burnley, Norwich, Portsmouth, Watford and Wigan!

Way behind QPR (12), Stoke (16), Bolton (18), West Brom (18), Fulham (19), Derby (22), Blackburn (24) and Southampton (28).

Then we come onto the 15 other clubs who have played a minimum of 40 matches in Europe and in some cases hundreds.

That's a total of 30 clubs with more (and in most cases way more) appearances in Europe than Sunderland.

(For the record the above figures exclude tinpot trophies like the Fairs Cup and Inter-Toto Cup - neither of which Sunderland have appeared in. Also excluded are the Welsh clubs).

Any reasonably minded observer would class European appearances as a key elemant in defining a "big" club. However, Sunderland's lack of European pedigree is always "the elephant in the room" when discussing SAFC with it's supporters. Whilst it is maybe understandable that the vast majority of Sunderland fans have this "blind-spot" about their own clubs paltry European record, supporters of other clubs don't and can see the wider picture, which does not stack up to Sunderland being a big club.

When we were Champions 6 ( six ) times, there wasnt a Champions league to play in at the time.
Also one of our Wembley Cup wins no Europe. So circumstance has played a part really.

Maybe we would have added Champions of Europe several times, who knows. Lets just hope we didnt break your record for the biggest defeat in a UEFA final in the years we would have played in the also rans competition. Probably another 7 or 8 seasons.

But yes, our glory days came without a European chance, unlike your glory day.

Lath understandably took a bit of time to find his feet and get used to the English game. He also had some time out with injuries. He was proflilic after coming back into the side and I reckon he could easily score 20-30 goals this season if he can stay fit.

Riley McGree signed a new deal and will be a key player for us if he can stay fit, as will Finn Azaz, who plays as a 10.

We've signed an American DM called Aidan Morris and he's impressed pre-season. I'm hoping him and Hackney will compliment each other well in midfield.

Yes, cant argue. Somewhere between 2nd to 4th would be my guess. If Lath gets 30 then maybe Champion ? who knows.

Exactly, there was no European football because it was back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. End of really. It didn't exist. Things were a lot different back then. Football definitely was. As I say the likes of Preston, Huddersfield and Sunderland were winning trophies. Different times.

Thankfully, we have won a trophy relatively recently and got to play in European football, we also didn't go out after 1 leg and had a brilliant run. It is something most clubs in modern football could only dream of. Something worst crowing about.

Yes most modern fans dream of supporting a team like Middlesbrough. Give your heads a shake man! Wonder if there’s any Sunderland fans on Middlesbrough’s board, if they have one!

Fair points but on the other hand, Sunderland have won the World Club Cup which very rarely gets mentioned.
