The tweet Borini made about flying back doesn't say when he's flying back. My interpretation of it is that he's not training because of his injury so is killing time in the hotel until the end of the Liverpool tour, then he'll fly back and start his recovery. A bit like Lallana is not coming back when his injury is worse. Just keeping the squad together to bond

He could be worried about signing a contract for 3 or 4 seasons worth of relegation battles. Probably thinking if he has another good season on loan here either Liverpool will take a chance on him or another top club will come in for him. Also if we have a better season and were to finish top half it could persuade him to move permanently.

He obviously likes Sunderland but our perceived lack of ambition might be the reason why he is stalling on the deal. After Gus has had a full season it will be clearer in what direction we are heading. It makes perfect sense to me that he would want to come back to a club where he had a good time and where he will play regularly without committing his long term future just yet.

Why would the fans react negatively? If the lad feels a permanent move to Sunderland isn't in HIS best interests then that's his call.
He gave us a 100% last season when he was temporarily our player so that's all you can ask as far as I'm concerned..
 
I'd be happy with that, I can understand his reluctance to sign permanently, and some peoples objection to him signing has been that he played out of his skin because he was on loan and trying to impress and so may not be so good without a point to prove.

Well he'd still have a point to prove and if we do well who knows he may sign permanently. If the worst happens and we are in trouble or relegated then he can still move on to a club that he believes matches his level of ability.

Valid points but truth is that having a contract wouldn't really effect that. If he signs permanently he gets a signing on fee, a bumper contract, an opportunity to play regularly and in reality knows that if he's awesome then a big club will come in for him and if he wants to go the power is pretty much in his hands. He's more or less in a win win situation.

If anything the delay will be about agreeing contractual terms, possibly around stuff like release fees. His agent will be aware that even if he's brilliant clubs won't want to spend that much more than we are for that type of player, that is very good but not world class, and will want a release fee as close as possible to the currently agreed fee. We, on the other hand, probably want either no clause of that kind or a bumper fee hopefully guaranteeing us a decent profit so might be suggesting 25m which would severely limit his clients options if he did want to leave.

Either way I still think he'll sign.

We are still Sunderland, and I love my team, but footballers don't love any team and when I think with head over heart I understand that it's because we are still Sunderland that we may not be a huge attraction to players.
As I said just my opinion
