Read this a few times. It has incorrect information.

We didn't play Athletic Bilbao, we played the Spanish national team at the old San Mamés.

Borja, the local sports researcher who we're working with, sent me these photos from local newspaper archives at the time.

Apparently, being called a Geordie in those days was common.

The Atlético Madrid red and white shirts coming from the material made to make mattresses is inaccurate too.

Juan Elorduy transported the shirts from Bilbao to Madrid, that is fact. What is not known is how they got those shirts. We believe Juan Arzuaga, who had opened a new sports shop in Bilbao months before, imported the shirts from Henry A Murton Ltd in Fawcett Street Sunderland.

As we've mentioned before, we believe Arzuaga suggested to Athletic Bilbao directors to get red and white shirts from Henry A Murton Ltd in Fawcett Street Sunderland as he knew of this shop from the 4 years he spent living in the north east playing rugby between 1898-1902.

It says Fred Pentland had no known links to the north east. He played for Middlesbrough at the time Athletic Bilbao changed to red and white shirts. Athletic tried to sign him for the copa del rey but as he was a professional player, he wasn't allowed.

All was not lost however, as he suggested Andrew Veitch amongst others playing local league football in the north east. Veitch was a forward playing northern league football at the time. Veitch went on to play for Athletic along with others recruited from English teams to help with their copa del rey charge. Veitch, Heslop, Grapham, Tickner, Burns.

The venue is in the Bilbao region. We're hoping to get teams from the Sunderland and County Durham area to come and take part.

We're finalising a poster which should be released by the end of the week.

We'll be entering talks with local town hall, county council and Basque government in the next week or so to ask for support and funding. We're promoting it as a cultural event rather than just a football tournament. We'll be promoting Basque culture and language for visitors from England, English language for locals here and we'll be explaining the history of the links between Sunderland/County Durham and Bilbao. With all that in mind, we expect the above-mentioned will be fully supportive of this initiative.

If it takes off, it could be something that works both ways, a tournament in Bilbao then a tournament in Sunderland/County Durham.
