As part of our branch's aim to strengthen links between Sunderland & Bilbao as well as gain a larger following of Sunderland fans in the Basque country and the rest of Spain, we're hoping to organise a junior 7 a side tournament next year at the start of June.

If you coach or have kids that play under 10s, under 12s, under 14s age groups and you'd be interested in participating in the tournament, send us a message on twitter/X or email at [email protected].

We've got venues for the tournament as well as several local teams interested in participating.

Cheers

How are the links going generally with SAFC & Bilbao?

You being well received?

Everyone we've talked to and passed on the research results through articles has been well received and say that the version we give makes much more sense than what the San Mamés Museum director has as official on the club website which hasn't been updated for many years by the way.

However, a curious observation is that there is no mention of the Southampton shirt link in the club museum nor did they mention it on their social media accounts on St George's today this year when they honoured their links to English football. They did mention the blue and white shits which they wore before the red and white and were based on Blackburn Rovers which is true.

We sense that avoiding mentioning the Southampton story in the museum and on their social media pages suggests they're no longer sure.

A few days after our 1st article was published in a local newspaper and minutes before we did a live interview on radio popular Bilbao, the club communication director requested our telephone numbers through a friend as the museum director wanted to meet and discuss our findings. We're still waiting.

This tournament will definitely put us on the map and generate a lot more media interest which will lead to more people hearing about our research and seeing that Sunderland and Bilbao both as cities and football clubs used to have strong links and our objective is to bring those forgotten links to light again and strengthen relationships between the people of Sunderland and Bilbao

Excellent stuff keep up the quality work of spreading the word.

For anyone who coaches U10s, U12s and U14s or you have kids playing at these levels and want to pass it on to their coaches, here's a Google form link to fill in to express an interest.

A newsletter will be sent out to those interested at the end of this month/early November with confirmed details and prices.

All teams are welcome but bear in mind it is a tournament organised by a Sunderland supporters branch & will have a Sunderland AFC/Bilbao Black Cats theme.
