Big cats roaming in the north east

Think of all the animals you've ever heard about
Like rhinoceroses and tigers, cats and mink
There are lots of funny animals in all this world
But have you ever seen a panther that is pink?

Think!

A panther that is positively pink,

Well here he is, the pink panther,
The rinky-dink panther,
Isn't he a panther ever so pink?

He really is a groovy cat,
And what a gentleman, a scholar, what an acrobat!

That totally isn't the Mancini track, but it's a common misconception so I'll forgive the website.

Around 15 years ago there had been a load of sightings around Durham of a big cat roaming around. I lived out in Rowley past Consett at the time and was one of the many reasons I came back to live in Sunderland  I had to walk home to Rowley from Lanchester one night too, absolute pitch black it was.

I wouldn't worry. About that time, the only thing that would be on the prowl out there would be @alexander. ;)

I'm convinced I saw a large black cat a few years ago.
I'd been walking with the dog through woodland near Cornsay Colliery.
I saw some large animal in the distance which took off as soon as it saw us.
It definitely wasn't a dog as it was feline in the way it moved, but was much larger than a domestic cat.
Obviously I can't prove anything, but I've got a pretty good knowledge of animals, and I'm fairly sure it was some kind of big cat.

I was escorted home one night by the police who said there was a cougar spotted roaming about, we’d been to my sister’s friends house and decided to walk home, it was less than a mile. This was Alberta though, not Peterlee.

I once got to grips with a cougar. Felt a bit like I’d been playing with Johnny Giles - Leeds and Eire - for 90 minutes.

Posted on here before. Not NE England but NE Scotland.

Back in 1997 when I was living in Aberdeen I'd been out with a lady friend for a drive and we ended up in the woods near Tyrie Bank just off the A96 near Blackburn for them that knows. We were parked up in a picnic area car park discussing the merits of tomato based pasta sauce or summit when she suddenly got a bit spooked. Thought some one was watching. So I'm looking into the pitch black woodland and scrub; this must've been about 8 o'clock at night, autumn time. Something moved in the low bushes 20yrds max in front of us. Dark shape, barely discernable. I turned the full beam on and sat/crouched under the bush was a large, 3-4ft long, black, heavily built cat. Bright yellow/green eyes, long tail and sat as cool as you like looking straight at us. Jumped up and off into the dark. Absolutely not a domestic cat. The lass was properly freaking out and I'll be honest I was a bit shook up too.
Perverts knocking on the window you can deal with. It's also apparently well known up that way but I knew nowt about it till I telt some one at work the next week.
