that's part of the story - I believe the Sunderland team were keen to get on with the seasonal festivities and at 9-1 decided there was 'no point' in continuing, the humiliation of complete dominance being so clearly evident League positions by the end of the season may have helped to peg back our lead in that other department but the facts are simple.

If you want to be petty you can even move onto "Who's finished second in the top flight most times" and "Who's finished third in the top flight most times", the answer in both cases in Sunderland.

Finishes in the top three:

nufc = 11 times
