BazBall is Dead

Agree. Selection on "vibes" still has to have some sort of logic behind it.
I remember England selecting Trescothick and Vaughan, both of whom had modest country averages......but at least they had games under their belt, and then very quickly showed their abilities at Test level.
These two examples, plus Strauss are exactly the type of player/CC background that they should be looking for - not a Bethell or a Bashir.

Even prodiges from a previous era, like Gower, had a solid couple of years behind him

No doubt been said a million times but we just don't win in Australia. It just doesn't happen.

The thing is for me this time round, however you go about selection, you have to have a pool of players. There has to be an alternative when individuals struggle. We literally have no other options than the current team. It must be the smallest group we have ever had.

It is just bizarre.

It’s not just about winning, 5-0, 4-0,5-0 suggests we don’t even compete

The advantage the other major cricketing nations is that it's probably their biggest sport or at least the biggest world sport they care about so, they get the best athlete's and the interest is very high, compared to the uk where anyone with great athletic talent goes in to their biggest sport in the country, Football.

My gripe is that everything has to revolve. around the Ashes.

Im happy watching all test series. Yes the Ashes is our biggest series but when we lose it's like the end of the world for the ECB.

We never had this panic when the WIs teams of 30-50 years ago were thrashing us.

Like Australia now, they simply had better players.

Yeah that the deeper problem the alternatives don’t seem any better

Very worrying indeed

Except for the series we won, 2010-11, 1986-87, 1978-79 etc

Even in the 1990s we were winning consolation matches

Yeah great post, and frankly common sense and not over analyzing it!

get and agree it’s the most important one, but you right it always seems the end of the world and everyone one blamed and massive overall called for.

I can’t believe we are as bad as what the results show. The players have to take responsibility but the tactics are utterly mindless. Wild short pitched bowling and attack at all costs with the bat.

The management team have to go

Some of the bowling has been really poor. But, the mad thing is, we’ve still bowled them out relatively cheaply. Then we’ve just batted really poorly across the series. And fielded terribly.

Comprehensively outplayed without Australia having to really work hard for their wins. So disappointing

Just my take really but I can't tolerate any more of Pope after over 60 test caps, he's averaging about 17 in Australia ffs

Could select a young English county cricketer who is playing local cricket in Australia at the moment and I doubt they would do much worse. 17 ffs!!!:lol:
Also just seen this on twitter

"If Zak Crawley doesn't make 30 in the second innings, he will become the first opener in Test history to make fewer than 3000 Test runs from his first 100 innings at the top of the order"
To make things worse that 30 average usually consists of 10 absolutely shit efforts then a decent hundred somewhere along the line. As a 3 you may as well wander onto the pitch with him and get a feel for the game as his runner.

Yup me and our lass said Crawley and Pope will score well in the second innings. Crawley has a real talent for finding a score when he's under severe scrutiny. Pope I fancy to score well next innings purely for that reason alone

I don't get it either .its like obsessing over one lass you like over several others ;)

Pope’s last ‘career saving knock’ was against Zimbabwe, too.

But given that the alternative was a bloke who’d never scored a hundred it was probably a good thing.
