They might give it more explanation in the second part but I totally bought into the idea, his planet was ravaged by overconsumption, he had a daring plan that would have saved it and was chastised for it. What then happened was exactly as he predicted. Instead of only losing half, greed caused them to lose everything. Obvioulsy he's a psycopath to add to that but he has made it his lifes mission to set the universe right and give it more time to develop.

Any plan a psycopath comes up with should involve a certain amount of cretinism. I think you're being a bit harsh on that supposed plot hole there. I mean Hitler supported the extermination or expulsion of people to create a lebensraum. Crazy people do crazy things.

But Hitler said he wanted rid of the Jews and set about killing them all. Thanos has set about a plan which would fail utterly to solve the perceived problem he's trying to solve. This is like the SNP's minimum alcohol unit price idea, which makes Thanos basically a big-chinned Jimmy Krankie

How do you spin that. If he wants to remove the chance of overconsumption killing off the universe... surely killing half the population helps that?

He does nothing to change the factors behind the overpopulation, and assumes that trillions of people on a huge range of planets across a presumably very ecologically and structurally diverse universe are exactly double the population they need to be in relation to available resources, or what distribution of resources between planets might look like. He’s been doing this for decades and hasn’t noticed that one-off reductions of populations of that scale would be wiped out in a generation. He’s supposed to be intelligent enough to put all these plans together and outwit various opponents but not intelligent enough to work out that by his own experience his plan isn’t working, and also he’s supposed to be powerful enough by the end of the film to reorder the entire universe according to his will but it doesn’t occur to him to come up with an alternative approach that would be more effective.

He's also a psycho who doesn't think rationally
