The short answer is a pink ball swings more. Couple this with the fact it’s harder to see at night than a red ball in daylight, it’s a perfect combo for a fast swing bowler like Starc.

I completely get the need for team building and to reset the mind after the first test, but it really does rankle that they’ve decided to go for a round when they should’ve been playing a test match.

It just makes it look like cricket isn’t the priority.

For what it’s worth, the previous one they played under Stokes England batted first, ran up 300 at nearly 6 and over and declared halfway through the final session. Funky even by Bazball standards and I can only imagine the social media meltdown if it hadn’t worked. But it did. And we’re basically collectively fine with Bazball as long as it works. (In fact he was crucified instead that season for his old fashioned to the extreme enforcement of the follow on in the next test)

It appears that the ground they would have played on for this warm up is slower than the test pitch, hence the players backing out of it and choosing to have extra nets instead.

Even Aussie former players like Stuart Law and Peter Siddle have backed England's decision (well they would, wouldn't they? )
