For the most part it's perfectly safe, but it's just one of the latest things for scaremongers to jump on. If people actually look at the method on which rodents are fed aspartame, it's absolutely ridiculous quantities.

you're clearly a very knowledgable and helpful forum member, judging by the amount of helpful posts, replies etc however a feel you're a little out of your depth on this issue. You shouldn't be advocating the use of products containing aspartame whatsoever.

there have been endless reports highlighting the serious danger of consuming this poison, dating back to the early 1970s actually. unfortunately the aspartame industry is a multi billion dollar one and therefore has taken a status similar to that of the tobacco industry.

The evidence is mixed to say the least. There are plenty of studies that show no risk and don't have any links to the sweetener industry. The studies that demonstrate serious negative effects tend to use massive doses that would be very hard to achieve through the diet (the reason sweeteners work is because you only need a very small amount of them compared to glucose). There is absolutely no evidence that having the odd can of diet coke here or there will cause you any ill effects.

Surely any potential harmful effects of aspartame consumption are lower than the potential health effects associated with being a lard arse, which you undoubtedly would be if you pouched the amount of full calorie cans of pop that you would have to of diet fizzy for the aspartame to be a potential issue.

Probably. Better off sticking to water instead of either most of the time then choosing between diet and regular soft drinks based on which you prefer the taste of. Regular coke has about 200kcal/500ml compared to about 4 for diet coke though which soon adds up if you drink a lot of it.

Aspartame is one of the most heavily tested additives in the industry, it is safe within reasonable consumption. The research in rodents that shows negative effects is literally HUGE doses of aspartame being practically shovelled down their throats.

Please see a review of aspartame safety by Butchko (2002).

Used to drink 2 and a half litres of Pepsi Max a day recently cut it down to about a bottle a week and never felt better since replacing it with water. Still can't beat an ice cold pepsi tho

Probably more down to the caffeine content than the sweetener mind.

no one is saying that the odd can of diet coke is going to do any harm (although why anyone prefers a diet version is beyond me). but we're not talking about pop when aspartame is the topic though, as its added to over 4000 products worldwide.

when you consider the amount of foodstuff products its added to then boycotting it as a rule is my policy everytime. anyway id much rather just have organic sugar sweetening things I consume.

ive heard that drinking your own piss can turn you into a cynical sarcastic arsehole so id keep an eye out for that.

any need to be so aggressive? pipe the fuck down you humourless little scrote.

probably a touch too aggressive but im sick of intelligent threads that get thrown off course and sabotaged by nothing 'toilet humour' comments - you should be challenged.

id ask myself what ian curtis would think about your immature comment and maybe about our aspartame debate too - he's obviously your hero.

For anybody (likely everybody) that couldn't be arsed to read much of the aspartame safety review that I posted on the previous page, here is the summary.

"The extensive research done with aspartame overwhelmingly demonstrates it safety. In addition, aspartame has been consumed by hundreds of millions of people around the world over the past 20 years, representing billions of man-years of safe exposure. Nonetheless, the safety of aspartame continues to be challenged by individuals who either ignore the data or are not familiar with the totality of the data.

The allegations raised regarding aspartame by a few individuals have not been based on controlled scientific studies. Rather, they have been largely based on anecdote, personal opinion, conjecture and hypothesis. Further, the few studies suggestive of an apparent effect of aspartame are not reproducible by others, are done with dosage routes of administration (e.g., ip or in vitro) not relevant to aspartame consumption, or are so flawed from a methodological or statistical standpoint that valid conclusions cannot be drawn.

The scientific evaluation of aspartame’s safety has extended well beyond standard safety testing for food additives. When the safety data for aspartame are evaluated as a whole, the weight of scientific evidence is clear that aspartame is safe for its intended uses, and there are no unresolved questions regarding its safety."
