Too many all rounders in that line up. Bairstow at 4 is at least one place too high and 6 bowlers + Root/Denly is way too many

That said, thanks to teh selectors, the only other batsman is close to being unselectable(!)

Massive boost for England...Khawaja passed fit.

He's been very good in test cricket over the last couple of years. If I was them I'd be opening with Bancroft as well, he's performed well this season and shown on plenty of occasions he can stick in and let others play around him. Test bowling will be different of course but he seems to have the technique to cope with English conditions at least.

Denly has confirmed it himself. Pleased that Root has finally stepped up to 3, but Denly isn't the answer in any batting position.
It's the usual weak selection management - f***ing about with the batting order after 1 test is like a throwback to the bad old days of the 90s
Why play Roy at No.1 for one test then move him down to 4? If they really saw his as a no.4 then why not play him there v Ireland? If they think they saw something they didn't like about him opening (70 odd on a dodgy wicket) then why knee jerk and move him straight away?

He's good on home soil. I think his test record outside of Australia is quite poor

As I've been saying since last summer, Curran's best chance of staying in the team is as a batsman, he has the right temperament and technique. Also handy to have a completely different option to chuck the ball to if we need a few overs here and there.

The rest of the team gives us as much proven strength in each position as we can as well as giving us a very strong bowling attack

Sorry I mis-read your original post. Denly has confirmed he is batting at 4, no move for Roy.

You're right about Khawaja, averages 30 outside of Australia. I like him, he's a classy player and good to watch, but that record will give our bowlers plenty of hope.

 Still worth ranting that Denly is in the team anyway!. Malan struggled in his last few tests but he or Ballance would be an improvement at 4.
I think Ballance has had all the chances he's going to get. Came into the side, did well but was found out. Sent back to County Cricket to work on his flaws, refused to do so and came back into the side with the back foot reliance and was barely able to score a run.

Malan is no good on seaming pitches - he'll be ideal in Australia and possible South Africa, but won't get a run on a green top with cloud cover

Vince is probably the best option we have, but he seems to lack the mental strength for Test Cricket

On Root moving up to three and Denley moving down: the irony is Roy's best position may be three!

The reality is its openers we need to find. The only reason they've done this imo is because they are so desperate for openers - and if and when we need to bring someone in (i.e. replace Denley) then its much easier to find a four than it is a three or opener. Because there aren't any!

Entire team of number sixes, pretty much.

Would be a good team to watch, if nothing else.

Would an innings last 20 or 50 overs? 🤔
